    Old time Rifle drill

This comes to us courtesy of the Woodpile Report which is a diverse, farming, shooting, survival, scientific, art blog by a guy who goes by Fred.

    Here's the drill:
    Next

"This drill is an old chestnut among some shooters but I hadn't heard it before. Goes like this. Get yer gear and yer sighted-in serious gun, go to the range, set yer target, get in position, aim and fire one shot. You're done. Don't touch that dial, nudging zero is a whole different exercise. This is a "know thyself" thing. Mark yer target and go home.

Do this over time, every weekend or every other day, or what ev-ver, no matter the weather: rain and misty, cold and windy, or warm and still. Whether yer rested or groggy. The idea is, a follow up shot may matter, or not, but the first shot will always matter. And you won't get to pick the weather"

Thinking I will try this except after the one round I may stick around and shoot other stuff too.

I call it a coldbore group.
Dedicate a target to the drill.
Go to the range and put the target up.
Fire your first shot out of the barrel for the day.
Pull the target, mark the shot with the date.
Bring the target back a week/month/whatever later and do it again.
After you have 5 shots on the target, you have a really good idea where the gun will print on your first shot when you go hunting.

I don't always save my targets (now that phones take good pictures)but I never adjust my sights/optics to center of 3-5-or 10 shot groups it's always a series of 1 shot groups
