New Smart Phone Scanner for Weapons announced

I'm not quite sure how the use of this will play out in the courts (unreasonable searches, etc.) but it's still worth noting. Could be a game changer.

"The company is called Royal Holdings, and the device is named SWORD. In a nutshell, the device can attached to a few different model smart phones that are already available. With this connection, the user can scan people in real-time to see if they are concealing firearms, weapons, and other items that they are looking for."

    It's BS. What a moron.

The guy walking in the video is a Youtube prankster called BigDawsTV. Look at the rest of the videos of that channel. Just a bunch of marketing videos with no actual working products.

unless cell phone cameras gain x-ray or metal detecting ability this is all BS.

and if they do gain x-ray, imagine the lawsuits from pretty much all people that get their privacy invaded by pervs that will use it to x-ray past the clothing of women, men, children.

It's all just "AI" which in real life means statistical machine learning. It will identify anyone wearing a "Git-R-Done" shirt as armed.

You know, before you start calling people "morons", you might do a bit more research on your own. That way you don't come off like a pretentious jack***. Oh, wait, that ship already sailed...

            Manufacturer's website
            Officer.com article
            Engadget article
            USAToday article

And for the record, I'm not validating this technology or product in any way, only pointing out that this may be on our horizon. It could be real or not, just like microstamping, but if it is real, it will impact everyone and not necessarily in good ways.

              Is it ?

I see some actual listings about this, haven't dug too deeply but found these:

No matter how stylishly makers dress them up, most smartphone cases are really about one thing: protecting screens from smashing. They're fragile cargo, we get it. Of course, some enterprising companies have taken things further, whipping up cases that transform into Android phones and selfie drones. Now Royal Holdings has jumped into the fray with SWORD, a five ounce phone case that works like a 3D-imaging scanner.

We've seen smartphone cases that add style and battery life. This new case looks to add a different type of feature: The ability to detect bombs and guns.

Yes, they have all been fooled.

                Show me a product.

By the way, I wasn't calling you a moron. I was calling the company a moron for using video of a popular youtuber to show how their non-existant product would work if it actually existed. Which it doesn't.

Or maybe he was exposed to a beta weapons scanner whilst wearing a beret from his special forces days.

BTW, the officer.com isn't an article, its a Press Release put out by Barry.

This product may be bogus, but radio interferometry to detect weapons is nothing new. What is new is that it can be done with simple wifi chipsets:

Technology already available in homes and neighborhood coffee shops can be used to detect weapons, bombs and explosive chemicals in bags in stadiums, schools and other public venues. A study co-authored by Yingying Chen, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Rutgers-New Brunswick’s School of Engineering, explains how it works. Read our release and the coverage in the The Philadelphia Inquirer and Newsweek.

Thought I just had: Let's grant that the product actually works. The court says that your state must permit concealed carry or open carry. One of the downsides of a concealed carry policy is that it's easier to subtly convert into a carry ban. If you can turn any smartphone into a CCW detector, there's no such thing as CC, and you have to have an open carry policy.

In 1998, Sony accidently released a Night Vision camcorder that had the ability to see through people’s clothes. The situation was discovered by Greg Hunter who demonstrated the same with the help of two volunteer models.

For the sake of argument, let's assume that this specific product announcement is BS, that the product doesn't actually exist. The technology however does, although it may be in its infancy. Whether piggybacked on a smart phone or as a stand-alone product, this concept could actually become a viable product. Then what?

Lawsuits over invasion of privacy? Court rulings? Law enforcement use? Are we going to see them at every Costco, movie theater and night club? Would concealed carry laws become in practice open carry?
