Regarding the origins of the term mark I said nothing. I mentioned Mark Twain because of the use of mark to mean a boundary where one thing ended and another began. It is either of Scandinavian origin or old Latin as in marque. But it is many centuries old.

The British used it more than many others in the last two centuries for firearms.

      He Came Before

      Mark came before Matthew.

Actually when I was in the military we were told we invented it - the first version of a military item, e.g. a tank, was Mark 1, then Mark 2 , etc

Ha! The British Enfield Revolver Mk I went into service in 1880. The MkII about 1883 or so.

British Lee Enfield Mk I rifle went into service in the 1890s.

As far as tanks go the world's first tank was the British Mark I to appear on a battlefield. Entered service in 1916 or so.

I think a lot of these posts missed the mark

Because you can call a scratch on your pistol a skid mark.

The Brits make it even more confusing.

They would have number and mark in the same model. As well as Arabic and Roman numerals.

I say, old boy, we weren't saying that a tank came FIRST,
                    - simply giving an example - could have used a Mark 1 fighter plane as an example (not Mach 1 of course ...).
And yes, I did fire an Enfield and used the good old British SLR during my Basic Training, before we were allowed to use the "generous Americans'" 's AR15s

I was playing off the post above mine about the tank Mark 1 and Mark 2.
So I posted the Lincoln Mark 3.
It was a tank as well... LOL

I know the old school diving helmets had the designation MarkI, Mark II etc.
