    National Forest question

I was hiking with my kids and wife last weekend and i noticed a sign that said entering National forest please have your firearm unloaded and in a locked containter, or broken down in unoperatable condition. I thought you were allowed to shoot in the National forest?

It may have been a rule local to that area. I was in the los padres nat forest the other weekend where there were fires last year. Even in areas with very little burn evidince and no environmental danger possible, there was no shooting allowed. Ranger even tried to write me up for it and I had to try to prove that I didn't shoot anything (Yet)!! In Cali, I have come to realize there is nothing safe........ backpacking is the safest but still highly patrolled.

Some national forests have designated hunting and shooting areas.

I ran across the same thing about fifteen years ago or more. It was, if I remember correctly land affiliated with CDFG and a special no hunting preserve or some such. They even had a CDFG Warden asking if I had any weapons in the rig. Surprised the heck out me to see him sitting in the road in the middle of nowhere. I had a '72 FJ 40 with the top off and stuffed to the gunnels with camping gear so I didn't worry about not telling him about the Ruger 9mm I had stashed beyond me. If I had a rifle I'd probably would have had to "come clean" and been screwed.

I fail to see a thing funny about a sign being shot up. This is the kind of thing that casts us all in a bad light.

Its a very bad situation when a person cannot go into a national forest with a firearm.

NEVER go unarmed, even if it's pepper spray. There are....to put it politely...interesting people...who go up in the hills. Especially near large population centers.

Mexican cartels here up in the hills. And the local drug growers, pretty much all armed to the teeth.

Thats a new one. How about some specifics like what forest off of what highway etc? With this info we should be able to check the NF web pages to see whats up.
The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.
