There's not point trying to figure this out. Every range has their rules. Your particular range doesn't want a loaded gun on the table and out of anyone's direct control...even for a few seconds apparently. Their range, their rules.

Simply leave the mag next to the weapon and have your uncle insert it and charge the weapon. Good for him to learn how to do that anyway.

We do not have any rules concerning who puts the mag in or even who charges the gun.
Glad to see I'm not the only thinker here. I've seen morons at the range who find it cute to hand their girlfriends a fully-loaded Glock, then LOL when they drop it after the first shot.
I prefer to start beginners with a revolver - especially timid ones. No moving slide, less happening.

Th RO is full of chet.

There is no such safety rule unless if he made it up right there for himself.

It's not unusual for ranges to offer up some seemingly bizarre rule, perhaps due to some bizarre event that occurred there, so it makes sense to the ROs.

As long as it isn't completely nonsensical, I just roll with it.

This right here, we've had some 200+ years in this country with firearms being a big part of it. Every rule you run into at a range has a story of behind it.

Maybe he made it for good reason. I saw several ND's in service, most were while picking up a loaded weapon.

I don't think what the OP did was unsafe, but it may very well be a rule of that particular range.

that being said, if the gun didn't have a safety, there is a much greater chance that a new shooter gets their finger in the trigger guard and accidentally fires when trying to pick it up.

the safest way to do things would be to have the shooter pick up an unloaded gun and insert the mag themselves. although this can also be unsafe, as many people have difficulty keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction, especially when racking the slide. when i'm teaching new shooters, I stand behind them at approximately their 4 o'clock, so I can assist if needed. I verbally walk them through all the steps to get the gun ready, constantly reminding them to keep their finger off the trigger and the gun pointed downrange.

Just another insane RO. I doubt it was the range policy. Probably, he made it up, since he wasn't comfortable with a noob on the line. I call it BS.

Indeed, they are very strict with the rules. However, I often moved loaded rifles from one table to another without any issue or word said. Probably, you encountered another bossy RO.
