    Hunter Safety Course

What is the cheapest/decent hunter safety course in the Valley or Antelope Valley area? Something with live fire.

    Thanks

Angeles used to offer it. That's where I had gone, but it was a few years back. They don't have live fire though.

Angeles is the best deal i found at 10 bucks. no live fire. If i can't find anywhere under 25-40 bucks with live fire, then angeles i come.

I took the course when I was 18. I still till this day havn't gone hunting (I'm 23). The instructors were very nice. I remember they used to offer the course once a month. One of my other friends had gotten his junior license back in the late 90's. He had gone to Pony Express in the valley. They offered live fire and took the students to angeles.

If you "know your stuff" you can challenge the test and take it without taking a hunter safety class. But, if you fail the test, you still have to pay for taking it and then you MUST take a class...you can't try to challenge the test more than once. I went this route and it worked out well.

I didn't know about the challenge thing, but I would reccomend that if you don't want to sit through the class. Most questions are very obvious.

I took it at Rahaggues, and I must say, I was impressed...not with the class, but with the instructors. I expected an 8 hours bore, and there were times when I was bored, but most kept it fun and moving quickly. Then the last speaker began. He was an older gent, a duck hunter, who had a passion about the family bonding aspects of the outdoors that I have never again seen. His "speech" was one of the most touching and heartfelt "love of the game" speeches I have ever heard. I would be proud to hunt with such a conservationist and woodsman.

None of the kids really got it, but every dad left that little room sobered and quiet...they knew they had just heard something unforgettable. It was worth $35.00.

---> if you want to challenge, this may help you study for it.

The class schedule link Class Schedule

Or asking you to ask your [EBWhite] question to your local Sportsmen Association or range for classes available.

I'm sitting there with my son this week and the fee is $10.00 for materials such as book(s) and 22lr ammo/etc. A sporting goods store sponsored ones would probably be a few dollars more. I've taken the class twice. First as a teenager then mid 20's when I couldn't find an old hunting license or the certificate -- pre-database days. My son thinks the class is old news and boring as it's stuff he already been feed a steady diet of. But he IS attentive and raises his hand to contribue during the discussions.

I do find the classes interesting still, similar vein as HillBilly ... Even if you can successfully challenge, find some time to attend the classes. The primary instructor is a college professor with a doctorate in education. All (4) are seasoned hunters. The amount of hours of instruction given makes $40.00 CHEAP. Less than $20 is a steal.

This will be a 'refresher' and kind of give you a feel about who else might be out there for the upcoming season.
