Police units at Pinelake Health and Rehab Center, where the gunman opened fire at 1000 local time (1500 GMT).

"At this time the suspect, Robert Stewart, is in custody facing these eight counts of murder, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, and other charges are pending at this time," said Maureen Krueger, Moore County district attorney.

"The police cannot protect the citizen at this stage of our development, and they cannot even protect themselves in many cases. It is up to the private citizen to protect himself and his family, and this is not only acceptable, but mandatory" Jeff Cooper

My theory: the horrific economy is pushing those who are close to the edge, over the edge.

Just as in the general population, many people who are borderline mentally ill are firearms owners too.

We're seeing the effects of desperation on an increasingly large fraction of the population that wouldn't be diagnosed as mentally ill, but are clearly close enough that when bad news piles on top of horrible news, they crack.

More and more of this is going to happen. And the media is going to be jumping on each and every one of them. Soon, someone is going to make a timeline of 2009 mass murders and murder-suicides and it will be made to look very bad for guns.

Looking at the pictures on the net, it looked like some kind of bolt action?

Gun Control is like treating the symptom, not the disease. Gun laws only restrict people who obey the law.

strap him to a chair and light him on fire and broadcast it.

I don't understand people who think jail time is either an appropriate consequence or deterrent to murder.

murder is not humane and neither should be its equal penalty.
