I'm looking for a private place to shoot in Central California where I can take a few friends and shoot guns from my own collection at my own targets. Has anyone ever found anything like this? I found some Airbnb rentals that have their own range, but so far all are in other states, big surprise. I know most land owners probably don't want to let people shoot on their land, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience renting a private range whether that's a vacation property or just a dirt berm on someone's ranch.

Renting a place to shoot

Depending on where in Central California you're in you might not be that far from public lands, and you can shoot your own guns at your own targets on public lands (with some restrictions but most of those are also imposed on private land). -
They are out there. I found mine on the central coast. I prefer fully private compared to BLM. However what you want to do is very possible on public land if you spend a while studying maps and regulations.Comment

Are you near Bakersfield?
This is an awesome membership range. Reasonably priced and a great locationRule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Consider renting my range. I'm outside Phoenix but if you want true freedom it does not get much better. I allow overnight camping and the only firm rules are no shooting the saguaros and no illegal activities. You won't need your own targets since I have about 20 scattered over 5 acres and you can stretch out to 1 mile.sigpic

I've shot on BLM, but you get all kinds of yahoos out there not shooting safely, or sometimes you drive a few hours to get there and a big group has the main shooting spot all filled up. They also don't allow steel targets which is what I have. I'm in Monterey County, but I'd be willing to drive a couple hours for something private. That Phoenix range sounds nice, and I might consider something like that for a once a year trip, but I really need something I can do on a weekend day drip or quick overnighter if I'm going to keep shooting regularly. I'm just bored with my local ranges, and BLM is a crap shoot.Comment

I am going to be doing a torture test on some new mags the owner of xtech sent us. Probably going out early Sunday morning around 7 or 8am but was thinking of camping overnight Saturday so I would leave Surprise around 6pm. I prefer Tecate light in the summer.
I really don't like shooting more than a few mags through my selectfire AK so if you bring ammo you can test the mags for me. You will need gloves since it gets hot fast on full auto. I'm using wolf classic so anything else would be fine. We should have at least 10 different AKs there.sigpic

OP, why not join together and build a Consortium of like minded responsible gun owners for the purpose of buying land and converting it to private active shooting facilities around California. You wouldn't not have to drive all the way to Milwaukee, from California. And, you could configure the facility expressly for outdoor short and long range shooting. Build a big enough Consortium and share the costs involved.
Seems like a no brainer to me. Seems too easy, in fact.Comment

Dang, I forgot to re-check this thread. Doesn't much matter though - all my AK ammo was stolen when my storage unit was robbed.I am going to be doing a torture test on some new mags the owner of xtech sent us. Mag never showed up on time and when it got here today it was only the body. Waiting for another mag or the internals.
Plus, it is hot. When the mag never showed we decided to do some wheeling instead but my son was still recovering from a cold so I just stayed home with him all weekend. I usually don't mind the heat but by August it just wears down on me so I only shoot 2-3 times a month now until October.sigpic

Yeah, that's the other thing, it's way too friggin hot. At least down here it cools off 20 degrees when it rains. Apparently up there the rain just turns to steam and it still stays hot.
November sounds better. The rattlers and the scorpions stay in their little holes.Comment

It's gross out now. Hot and humid. August and September are the only months that make me consider moving.Yeah, that's the other thing, it's way too friggin hot. At least down here it cools off 20 degrees when it rains. Apparently up there the rain just turns to steam and it still stays hot.

I'm going shooting this weekend. Fixed my Jeeps AC and I have a shipment of ammo arriving this week.sigpic
