Never seen anything other than safety checks. I understand the concern on a rare collector piece, but the majority of transactions it just doesn't matter.

My guess is that since the question was asked, this isn't just a G17 transfer the OP was concerned about.

When I was young and would go to the range I would ask everyone to show me their guns and I would shoot every single one they let me.

So many guns I would never have been able to touch much less shoot if not for that. Maybe they feel the same way.

Doesn't make it right without asking but...

Given the OP, I would agree... but in general, it's like the Ford buyer vs the Lincoln buyer.
The salesman is "married" to the Ford buyer for the life of the car.
The buyer of the $200 gun is more likely to be overly possessive about it.

Sorry this analogy is lost on me.

Depends on the store and the gun. I doubt most shops care about a Hi Point 9mm or a Glock 23 3rd Gen. If transferring something very exotic and expensive know who you are dealing with.

I remembered some CGNer drowning in his own tears years ago claiming a gunshop/range was extensively firing his common S&W 357 mag revolver extensively during the PPT period which I seriously doubt happened.

The owner of a cheap car is the one who is going to be back and be a PITA to the dealer every time they think there is a problem, real or imagined.
The buyer of a $200 gun is probably buying it with the last of his gas money for that week and is going to be more freaked out by a gun shop employee "finger effing it" than the buyer of a $2,000 quality gun who realizes that unless the gun store employee drops it on the floor, he's not going to hurt it.

There were a few of those threads... one referenced the shop where I bought my XD many years ago. I was allowed "conjugal visits" during those 10 days... the thought never occurred to me that the employees might also be shooting it.
One of the threads focused on the gun being more dirty than the buyer felt that it should have been from the 2 or 3 factory test firings. Crickets when asked if the same as when it was in that condition when DROS'd.
The PPT thread starter was more adamant that the gun was clean when he met the seller.

I had a FFL basically steal a magazine from me during the PPT wait time but don't really want to get in to that it is a long story and I never posted about it.

I do as a rule of thumb do not leave any extra items with a gun when doing a PPT just the gun and a case.

I agree. Never leave any accessories with it unless there permanently attached.

I've seen Rugers come from the factory quite filthy I wonder what type of ammo they used to produce so much fouling or how many test fires or proof rounds they use?

One was so dirty before I was aware of this I did not buy a new GP100 at a shop at a good price because I figured they were lying about it being new.

I guess for the paranoid don't DROS guns at a shooting range. I doubt most shops would be bold enough to take a gun out for a spin away from the shop. And in the case of common guns I really doubt they would.

When I finally fully move out of state that will be yet another benefit of taking home guns with no wait no worry about guns being messed with in a waiting period.

They're gun people so they are naturally interested in guns. As long as they are respectful I don't care that they handle it/ look it over. I can only imagine how uptight the OP must get leaving a gun in the store for 10 whole days...
