The rifle was purchased about a year ago from a local gun store and is an OLD Remington sportster. The gun was owned by an old mad who passed away and was now being sold through the sherrifs or something. The thing was its so old, theres no serial number. When the ranger saw this he was thinking about confiscating the gun. I was able to provide my story of how I obtained it and he wasn't sure what to do. He allowed me to take my gun but said every gun needs a serial number and he's gonna look into it. He took all my info so I want to figure this out in case he tries to contact me later. Do I need a serial number on this old little .22?
Please call and make a complaint with his agency, this sounds like a training issue. He had no right to take your information and threaten to take your gun. Firearms were not required to have serial numbers prior to the 1968 gun control act and it is only a crime if you remove or alter a serial number. The only way these agencies will provide their officers with training on the subject is if the public complains when they screw up.

I agree 100% do something to change it for future peopel and maybe you again as well.

I think the same ranger would think a home brew Ar "style" rifle with no SN is bad too.... I have thought about putting a # on the "inside" so it could be seen if need be, but I am proud of it being a home brew and celebrating that is does not need #'s on it...

Who cares about an old 22 and an untrained "Mr Ranger"?

I'd be more concerned with you "turning over" your 44 in your tent. Would you have done that at home as well?

Im not quite sure what youre getting at. He was sniffing around the place prety well so I figured Id best be honest up front. I knew I was within my rights to have a loaded weapon in my tent so....

I hope you did not hand the ranger your .44 loaded. He might have shot himself with it.

Hello Mr. Ranger Sir, everything ok in Jellystone , no pic-a-nic baskets in my tent.
I have neither the inclination or the time to relieve people of the regional and ethnic handicaps that they inherited from their ancestors.
