    Classes for new shooters.

Has anyone, as a new shooter, taken those classes that teach you all the basics of safety and laws, how to handle the firearm and most importantly, getting you comfortable with it in general?

How did you like it and did you find it very helpful? Which school did you go to and around how much was it?

I realize that a lot of you folks on here were taught by a family member or friend but I'm asking about actual classes.

Most gun ranges have basic, expert classes/courses. Some get into defensive shooting/classes with civil and criminal liability.

Thank you for the suggestion. I looked them up and they are about two hours drive for me. I appreciate your help.

Okay I'll look into that. I'm guessing the closest one to me is Dublin. Thanks.

If your willing to travel Front Sight is offering free 4 day classes. They will get you up and running. Just ignore the constant sales pitch. Once on site they are very professional.

I took one decades ago. They're designed from the perspective of someone who has never touched a gun before. If this is you and you have no knowledge of the basic gun safety rules, then a course like this couldn't hurt.

However, you can likely get the same benefit from a little self education on the interwebz and/or if you've got a buddy that has been shooting for awhile who can show you the ropes. You may also want to check with the NRA and Project Appleseed and see if they offer anything near you as it will likely be cheaper.

Moreover, I'd be in favor of trying to cover the very basics yourself and putting the money toward a Fighting Handgun I course, as I think you would likely get more out of it. If money/time isn't a factor, then do both.

I wish I can take time off to go that far, it seems like it would be a nice fun trip. But I have two jobs and I'd have to ask for the days off. Four days would be a loss to me financially. But thank you!~

If this is the one in TN, that looks like a really cool course. But it's a bit far for me to go. I appreciate the suggestion~

I have taken intermediate lessons from OC Indoor range. They tailor to your needs from beginner to more advanced. Its a 1 on 1 lesson and then you get a 30 day pass for their range.

Sorry to get to this late. Working two jobs back to back shifts makes me off kilter with the sleeping and eating pattern. Needed rest.

PM me when you have some range time available. I'm at the Livermore range and we can probably get you off to a good start and give some advice on how to proceed once you understand the basics.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

No worries. You sound like you want to get this right and however long that takes...just fine with me.

I can tell you're on the right track because you have the right attitude and as you gain experience in the shooting world, you'll learn that the right attitude is the most important thing of all. Especially when it comes to safety.

I won't poo poo you're initial idea of a "class" but only suggest you consider this golden offer down below:

Good luck whatever you choose OP. Let us know how it goes.

I took a beginner class last year before I even owned a gun. The class I took was at (the now closed) Cordova, and it was the first day part of their ccw class, along with shooting about 50 rounds through a .38spl Smith and a Glock 19.

I've taken a half dozen entry/beginner classes now over the past year. If anybody were to ask me how they all compare and which to take, I would ask if the person is more concerned about the legal aspect of owning a gun, or if they just want to shoot and know the basics. Laws, take a ccw class. Some CCW classes are VERY thorough and will cover both the legal aspects and handling as well. For just handling, take a fundamentals/foundation class. This last class I took for foundation, everybody wasn't a newbie shooter, so we did a lot of shooting and handling drills.

You can also use the search function on the NRA site to find an instructor near you.
