    Springfield Safety switch question

I just received my new Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec and was taking it apart to inspect and clean it a bit. After putting it back together I noticed that the thumb safety will not engage when the hammer is not cocked. Now this is my first 1911 so I am not sure if that is how it is or am i missing something. The thumb safety only engages when the hammer is cocked. Is that normal? There is no ammo in the gun yet, I am just trying to familiarize myself with it. Any input will help, thanks.

That is how it is supposed to work, at least on that gun anyway. There may be guns where you can engage the safety without the hammer cocked but yours is acting the way it was designed to.

No worries man. The thumb safety can only be engaged when the hammer is cocked. It's a single action pistol. Now check for the safety's function. Cock the hammer, engage the safety, pull the trigger. The hammer shouldn't drop then. Congrats on your first (of many, I'm sure) 1911. Shoot the crap out of it! But beware, the 1911 bug is incurable!

I have a Kimber 1911 and it does the same thing with the thumb safety. As others have stated I think its normal.
