    E. Camino Cielo shooting site

    WEST not EAST, sorry.
So over the weekend, wifey and I decided to go Santa Ynez the long slow way, stopped at Winchester Gun Club on W. Camino Cielo for a while then took the dirt road to Refugio (where Reagan's Ranch is) and then down the road to Santa Ynez, all back roads. Why ? just because we have not done it in a few years. The road is much worse than I remember, I scraped my skid plates twice, never needed 4x4 of course but much rougher than it used to be.

Ok, shooting question. Decades ago, there were some legal shooting areas on that road well past Winchester, I heard they were closed down a good decade ago. Is that true or is shooting legal there now ?

We found 2 groups shooting guns, one was with his wife and shooting trap, his wife was throwing pigeons and he was trying to hit them with a shotgun. Ok, looked like fun and he was doing it in a old area where I know it was legal decades ago, I didnt see any signs saying no shooting.

But later on in the road, we found a group of shooters that had a target up on the hill, parked in a open spot and shooting at the target ACROSS the road, isn't that a no-brainer illegal ? shooting across the road ? granted its a really bad dirt road, only a few brave 4x4's or taller 2 wheel drive trucks will make it and they were in a area that had a few hundred feet in each direction so they would absolutely see any oncoming traffic. They had quite a pile of rifles with them in the bed of the truck and were shooting handguns as we drove up, they stopped and said hi as we drove past.

I would not mind shooting in some areas of that road if its legal, I stopped at least a decade ago when they made it illegal so with 2 groups I am wondering if they are just risking it or its legal again. Granted, I doubt there is a ranger that patrols that road ever.

First I will admit that I know nothing about the area that you are referring to. I have never been there and probably never will. "BUT" the one and only "Shooting In A Closed Area" ticket/violation I received was not delivered by anyone in a land based vehicle. It was delivered Via "Helicopter", and by the time I realized they were looking at me...... It would not have made any difference if I packed up and left, they would have just landed and waited until I drove up. So if it happens that the area you are referring to is ok to shoot in, I personally would get something on paper/in writing, before I took that chance. As always, just my .02.

There's only one designated public shooting area on E. Camino Cielo.

I haven't been there in years but I heard that it's open. Just be aware of who's around you.

Last year a kid shot & killed himself by accident.

If you go, don't bring your old appliances as targets! Just shoot what ever is already out there and if you do bring something to shoot at pack it out with you!

Leaving garbage behind is the best way to get the site closed down for good!

Isn't Winchester Gun Club and the road you speak off West Camino Cielo, not East Camino Cielo?
The road goes past a couple big cell towers on your right as you're headed to Refugio?
          If not, I'm confused.

WCGC was able to shoot 600 yards, now 200 yards, at its upper rifle range. That range shot over the canyon but the Chumash claimed that was a scared area, so LPNF shut that down about 10 years ago or more. WCGC only allows steel shot on the shotgun range, LPNF again. So I doubt the two areas you saw people shooting would be LPNF approved.

I have lived here for 30 years and don't remember any designated areas except WCGC and the Glass factory on Camino Cielo. Could you be thinking of the trap/skeet shooting club below
Lake Cachuma? Unfortunately the two groups you saw probably left there empties when they were done. Going to be another area permanently closed off to easy access.
