What the hell is this stuff (ammo)?

"Lead free slug"? And what's with the hand-written magic marker? Looks like IW.

I can just imagine what sort of legends would be spun at a gun show.

Strange. Maybe calling it a “lead free slug” is a loophole to get around the “steel core” ammo restrictions?

Range officer: “no steel core ammo!”

Me: “oh these things? They’re just lead free slugs”

If I remember correctly that is the designation for armor piercing ammo. Secondly I wouldn't trust someone that can't spell "Surplus"

EDIT, Black tip is armor piercing, green tip had this description:

The unique green tip epitomizes the famous and well regarded Federal Lake City designs and engineering advancements. Every bullet is precision manufactured so you get high performance.

Not sure I believe that though either.

Also found this: The Full Metal Jacket bullet is a steel penetrator tipped, lead core bullet complete with the standard green paint used to designate penetrator tip ammunition.

Those are not lead free. Those are steel core but have lead. Will definitely get you a ticket in the condor zone or a fine on BLM land with fire restrictions.

Those might be the ones with the bismuth/tin alloy instead of lead.

And for what it's worth I suspect the IW is actually a MI.

But they're "green"!! That most certainly means they are safe for the environment.

Weird, if it was the new (and now standard) lead free ammunition used by the military, it should be labeled M855A1 and not M855.
Urban legends are a poor basis for making public policy.

                  What's MI for? Michigan?

Oh yeah, forgot about that stuff. That would be cool. Is the A1 stuff any better than ordinary M855?

Looks like nadodave above found the answer. Further info here:

With the proposed "ban" on the M885 ammo, people are out buying and selling their m885. Whether they are worth the high price for them is up to you but beware what you are buying. Also beware that the M855 is being replaced by a new round..the M8551A (and NO it will not be coming up for...

Would have been cool if it was the A1 stuff.

Meh, 62 gr. M855. No big deal here in America.

But if YOU can't have it, I'll give ya' tree-fiddy for yours.
