Can't argue with the python suggestion. Lots of other heirloom guns out there. See if you can track down an original S&W "registered magnum" from the 30's. If you don't know what I am suggesting, do a bit of homework.

I have an early 90’s prelock SW 686 Plus stainless that I acquired from my father. Anything from a parent is sentimental. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive gun to be passed down. I was just at the Range and a man was teaching his grandson how to shoot on a rifle he shot with his father, a 22 LR.

Cool where are you guys finding Pythons in 45ACP

OP, get a WC 1911 or something along those lines (and make sure you shoot it).

                Because 1911's aren't trophy/heirloom guns, it's a confusing thread.

If the idea of guns is not limited to hand guns, I would look towards a pre-64 Winchester rifle. My grandfather bought my dad one in a 300 winmag, and it will be my son's someday. The fact that it is a really nice rifle is nice, but also the way it has been used to hunt makes it more valuable to me. Knowing when you are out with it in hand and shooting an elk, the fact that others in your family experienced the same with that rifle is very satisfying.

Heirloom guns isn't about value. It's about the memories you share with your kids and the gun. High value guns are nice to hand down with an estate but if the kids have no fond memories of the gun and you they are going to the highest bidder.

Eastmanwes, I'm kidding about 1911's just giving the 1911 guys a hard time.

As mentioned above any quality firearm can be an heirloom if there's great memories made with it.

One of the best heirloom guns you'll find in families are .22's, because so many kids and grandkids learn to shoot with them.
