It's only a NFA violation if the transfer tax is not paid. The referenced article states that the weapon was legally purchased in Alabama which would infer that the tax was paid.

In any event, a violation of the NFA cannot be charged in a state court.

For that matter, is it legal to possess in CA, particularly if not registered as an AW? What about importation of an AW according to CA regs/laws? I just don't understand the interplay here between federal and state law in this case. SBR was legal federally but bought and possessed in another state.That makes it legal in CA? Not an unregistered AW with CA? I don't get it.
