Rifle home defence ammo POI shift vs range ammo

Most of us will divide our ammo choices into different categories. The most popular is range and home defence. Now with a pistol ~25yards using different bullet weights and types aren't that big of a deal, considering the shooter is the greater strain on accuracy.

With a rifle this is dramatically different. Especially in the ar15... Is it worth having superior home defence ammo, but not being zero'd with it, or having your range ammo and knowing you're going to be on.

I'm sure most people are anticipating in the unlikely even of a self defence scenario with a rifle, they'd be within point and shoot range, but what would you do in this given scenario?

To give context we're talking about using the rifle you practice with all the time. Not one that sits in the closet as a just in case.

as long as it is "minute of man" then who cares how far off from your range ammo it is.

Aim center mass...Any POI shift at that close range will be minimal to unnoticeable anyways.

My SHTF ammo is a load I developed. 75gr Hornady hollow point boat tail that zips along at 2800 FPS. It mimics the Hornady TAP 223 ammo. It’s 1 inch high and right when my rifle is zeroed for my 55 gr plinkers. I have the dope written down on my phone to rezero my rifle when I change ammo.

My plinking ammo ain’t no slouch either. 55gr Hornady FMJBT at 2900+ FPS. It’s what I have loaded at home. I expect it’s pretty devastating at close range.

              A great choice IMO.
I run Hornady SST for defense in my rifle. I shoot any 762x39 for plinking. I'm making the switch to that 8m3 "effect" for defense and plinking.

If it doesn't matter for a pistol at home defense distances, why does it matter for a rifle?

I have this issue all the time between copper hunting ammo and plinking ammo. Going to set up two different rigs.

I have a couple boxes of home defense ammo and thousands of rounds of match range ammo.

                    Now, what was the question?

Sounds like an excuse to get another rifle. Have one as a dedicated HD rifle with defensive ammo and the other as a range gun.

Imho use what you want. Considering any HD situations will be at short range (iirc for ccw shootings they tell you should be less than 25yds) poi shift won't matter much.

                        A shift of 2" at 100yd = 0.5" at 25 yrd

Federal fusion 223 is my hd ammo and I usually have one ar sighted in at 25 yards on a 1" shoot NC and call it good.

I was about to say this. Two rifles and pistols configured the same; one rifle/pistol for training and abuse, one rifle pistol for backup/defense/carry

I dont consider an AR or any high powered rifle round a good choice for home defense in a suburban / urban setting for a myriad of reasons. That said, it makes a great PERIMETER defense weapon everywhere. If you insist on arming yourself in your home with an AR, do what the military does and establish a BZO (25 or 50 yd zero). Choosing a long gun for interior home defense, if you are serious about your HD, I suggest you take classes on structure clearing with a long arm and long arm weapons retention in a CQB environment. I also hope you understand the concept of mechanical offset with regard to the AR platform and take that into account when making those late night precision 5 yrd shots...
