I shoot a lot of USPSA venues. I never see anyone slingshot their guns during a reload, always slide release.

Clearing a jam is a separate muscle memory action.

IIRC, the release was added to the 1905 design so Cavalry needed less hand movements.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

Just need to point the muzzle in safe direction. Training issue

Some slide stops are not easily accessible due to their low profile.

I have over 100,000+ rounds through one of my 1911's with the original slide that I always drop using the slide stop and it's fine.

I prefer using the slide catch on my Sigs but in my department training, we're firing Glock 22's and are required to use the overhand technique. I'm starting to get pretty good at it, but still prefer my Sig with slide catch. I don't have to shift my grip at all for it and it seems to be a lot easier and quicker. Eh, learn what they want me to learn I guess! The ammo's free. I can't complain.
