How many AR styled Rifles in CA? USA?

I had a argument with an anti this weekend. I told them that there was so many ARs out there that a confiscation would never be practical. Yet when I was ask just how many, I really didn't know the answer. I just said millions.
Is there a website I can reference?

Probably no way of knowing. Not everyone is registering. Long guns weren’t keeled on record until 2014. It’s allot more than than most other states I imagine.

There was a thread about this a year or two ago with some pretty good estimates. As I recall the numbers were huge and a CA buyback program would be extremely expensive.

^^Librarian posted some good estimating/estimated stats in a thread a while ago, I believe that's the thread you should look for.

I think that's one of the argument against it. Nobody really knows. If you confiscate you'll only be taking them away from the law abiding citizens trying to protect themselves who registered their guns. All the criminals who have illegal guns that we dont know about will still have there guns.

The manufacturers know how many receivers were serial numbered so if the dems get into power they may subpoena their records for their gun ban hearings. I imagine the quantity produced will terrify them and put an end to their argument that the AR is not in common use.

people on Ar15.com were saying palmetto state alone has sold millions in the last 5 years.. not sure where they came up with this figure. I wouldn't doubt it though.

People were citing mainstream sources that said 3 million. Also peope were vouching that it has been this number for the last 10-20 years..

I'm thinking more like 20-30 million at least after reading like a 10 page thread over there.

I mean ya internet hearsay ya, but whatever it is, it likely more then they are telling us

In early to mid-2006, during the great OLL stampede, there used to be weekly and monthly estimates. Those were pretty accurate, since most ARs were entering California through group buys, or a very small number of dealers, for example TenPercent. I stopped keeping track of them when they reached half a million. That was half a million ARs in half a year. The flood must have slowed after that, but there are probably over a million ARs and AKs in California.

The other important statistics is that in the last few years, about 400 thousand long guns (rifles and shotguns) have been sold per year in California. Of those, a significant fraction must be ARs and AKs. A reasonable guess would be 100 thousand of those per year, for about 12 years since 2006. That ends up agreeing with the above estimate, of way over a million such rifles.

We can roughly guess that each such rifle costs about a thousand dollars. That's a mix between the cheap ones (without optics they can be had for significantly less), and the nicely outfitted expensive ones. Multiply that by over a million such rifles, and you get at least a billion, perhaps two. For comparison: The total budget of the California DoJ is 850 million per year.

Nationally, the AR platform has replaced the lever action as “America’s rifle.” That is a whole lot of guns. If you’ve ever purchased a stripped lower, your DROS says, “firearm: other” at least it did prior to 2013 when I got mine. Because barrel length and caliber could not be listed.

It is impossible to know how many there are. The number at minimum would be tens of millions.

Before 2014 in this state you just "bought a gun" anyway. Nobody has a clue.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Haha you think the government would give us what we paid for our firearms when they demand a forced gun buyback?
