target shooting in secluded area? sheriff aproched

was wondering if you went out to a secluded area that you knew people went to shoot(evidence out targets and shells) and was approached by the sheriff and told you, you could not, would they be able to take your guns away from you?

...approached by the sheriff, or you approached the sheriff to buy him?

Maybe you should shoot where you know for a fact that it's legal?

That whole "but they did it too!!!!" argument stopped being effective back in the 3rd grade broski.

Luis I wish I could help you since the other seem unwilling to but I don't know the answer to your question. I just know that whether he is allowed to or not, he can still take them away. If a sheriff were to demand you weapons you only really have two choices.

I shoot on a deserted area near my gf's parents house near an Indian reservation, and was approached by a sheriff or a ranger (don't remember). I am pretty sure that where I am shooting at is not BLM land. The area is obviously a local shooting hang out evidenced by the expanded shells, brass and used appliances. The lone female sheriff was very courteous and inquired about what are we shooting and such, and then she told us that we cannot shoot there during the dry season. No confiscation just a courtesy reminder!

If you don't own the land, and if the land is not public land such as BLM or NF, and if the area your shooting in is not safe, then yes you could be cited and loose your guns. All land is owned by someone, including the State or City, and in these cases shooting on State or City land is most likely not legal.
The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.

Sounds like you got away easy. Thank your lucky stars and abide by the sheriff's wishes. That's what I'd do.

You need to be CERTAIN that the place is legal for target shooting..... if it is not, not only can they take your guns, they can arrest you too!

"You knew people went to shoot" is NOT good enough.

I was in Arizona and got in a lecture for this sort of thing from some (armed) National Park rangers. They were nice though and just gave me a warning ticket and pointed me towards a legit spot. It was a long a road where there were a few spots where it was legal to shoot and a few spots where people just shot anyway. If you a re courteous to them and defer to their rules you will probably just get a warning and told to shoot elsewhere. They will probably point you towards a legal spot.

So I guess if you are shooting at a road sign people are known to shoot at, that may not be legal either?
