Thoughts on bad eyesight.

I've seen a couple threads recently in which members are asking for advice regarding bad eyesight and not being able to see the front sight clearly. These posts have me thinking (like a grump), but pondering the dangers present. The calgunners who respond to these "posts del myopia" are helpful and full of ideas, which is nice to see. I'm of the thought that if you can't see the front site clearly, then you can't see anything beyond the barrel clearly, (unless the person is far-sighted I suppose). Perhaps the posts are from people who simply need bi-focals. So I'm mostly thinking, not of any particular calgunners, but anybody whose eyesight is truly terrible even with glasses, yet still shoots guns.

Now this is just spewing random thoughts, but... At what point does someone become a danger to those around them? When they are half blind? 81% blind? Cataract in one eye? Cataract in both eyes? I can't help but draw parallels to an elderly person with severe dementia trying to drive through a busy city street? I know it sounds bad, but which is worse? Would you go shooting with a friend or family member knowing they can't hardly see anything? This post is not intended to pick on anyone with bad eyesight, nor to be inflammatory, just to maybe start a discussion. Is it responsible to keep shooting with truly bad sight? What are your thoughts?

With corrective glasses much is possible. When hunting I bring spare glasses and also sun glasses to be certain. When cases become extreme and blindness is coming on. Its time to sell your guns.

My eyesight has changed over the last 30yrs. Had a hard time seeing my sights like before. Had my eyes checked and found out I had mild cataracts in both eyes. This past December I had them fixed but not before my Doctor gave me a set of contacts to show me what my eyesight would be after the surgery.
Holy cow! Should have done this sooner. No need for eye glasses and my sights a crystal clear.
OP if you need to, have your eyes checked. The life you save may be your own [emoji102]

Not going to cure blindness. But modern optics, red dots, etc. do make up for a lot.

Point of the post is at what point does one throw in the towel? If somebody can still see clearly at a distance they are not a danger to others. I understand that most vision problems can be corrected.

Chapped has it right. NOYB. Even people with poor vision or no vision have a right to defend themselves. Distance is irrelevant since most people with poor vision are probably not going to participate in long range shooting events, but may need to defend themselves on their property or in their homes. Constitutional rights are not dependent on passing a vision test or some lame perception or perceived danger to others.

However, on the subject of dementia, family needs to step in and deal with the situation. Thankfully, hiding firearms is relatively easy when dealing with people with cognitive issues.

I posted in the shotgun forum about having trouble getting my bead on target. I have only shot clay tournaments twice. Seeing the fast moving targets and getting a bead on them has been my problem.

I routinely shoot steel and paper at 200+ yards with irons and get respectable groups. I don't have any scopes on my rifles, I shoot all irons.

I know that if I felt I was a danger to anyone, I wouldn't shoot. Likewise, if I couldn't see while driving or knew that my reaction time had slowed to an unsafe level, I'd hand my kids my driver's license.

Too many people hang on too long because they want to maintain a sense of independence, whether it's shooting, driving or other activities. For me, I couldn't live with myself if I was unsafe and it caused an injury.
