Personal info engraving on a gun..

I was gifted a Ruger 10/22 not long ago from a friend of the family. I did the proper transfer at a CA ffl and waited the 10 days. Heres the thing, when I picked up the rifle, I noticed the owner engraved his personal info into the barrel such as name, DOB, and DL #. I am sure that he had good reason, but I want to enjoy the rifle without any trouble, and I am thinking that while shooting if I bump into a jumpy LEO and he sees that there could be an issue with it. I was thinking about sending in a registration for it so that when the LEO runs the serial # it will come back to my name.

Your thoughts on this? Should I send in the form or just not worry about it?

I would just probably swap the barrel for an unmolested one. Stock 10/22 barrels could be had very cheap on these boards as lots of people remove them anyway for custom projects.

+1 on swapping out the barrel. There isn't a lot of sense going through a paperwork shuffle for a component that is easily changed out. You were probably going to put some aftermarket stuff on it anyway, right?

That said, I spotted a fairly nice Marlin 39A .22 on a consignment rack recently at a fair price. Closer examination showed that a previous owner had somewhat carefully self engraved his CDL# on the underside of the receiver.

That rifle is still at the shop.

you can get OEM barrels cheap since many people go aftermarket w/o firing a shot. Just hit rimfirecentral.

If your that worried about it, keep a copy of the paperwork in your range bag. No need to spend more money on a new barrel.

Sure there is Of course I just happen to have a brand new SS barrel off my own 10/22 that hasn't been fired. I put a new .920 fluted SS one on.

Yeah it's gonna be a camping gun, I put on a Butler Creek folding stock on it.
It's over the 26'' required length. Maybe I will put a SS barrel on it to add some evil ness to it.
                  Thanks for the responces!

If an LEO runs the ser # and it comes back clear then there is no problem. It is not uncomon for LEO's to run into this type of thing and there used to it.
