national forest shooting around for fun?

i plan to go hiking and bringing some firearm for safely. my buddy and i wanted to know if it is possible to just target shot for fun. we will be in Angeles national forest. it is a non lead zone and i was told you do not need non lead round if you are not hunting. i am the only one with the hunting license non of my friends do.

so my question is it alright for my friends and i to shoot around (target set up) with non lead ammo? would there be any problems

this is my first time out and i have never been hunting .. i plan to make this a hiking trip as fun and responsibly as possible. i would love to hear your input as well. Thanks ahead of time

I am not sure if you can even carry, is that a national park?

Also considering how far a bullet can travel, you could possibly hit something you would regret later on.

I'd call the ranger station for the area you'll be in and let them make the call and also where they'd prefer you do it. Generally target shooting is OK in a national forest but a lot also depends on the local rangers.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

whoops - it appears Angeles is a little stricter when it comes to just target shooting - from their website

                "TARGET SHOOTING
Target shooting is prohibited outside of designated shooting areas. Two concessionaire-operated shooting areas are located within the Angeles National Forest. These are fee areas under Special Use Permit with the Forest Service, and are the only designated shooting areas within the Angeles National Forest. Designated shooting areas also exist on the Los Padres National Forest (805) 683-6711 as well as large portions of Bureau of Land Management lands (909) 697-5204.

                A Place to Shoot
Located 11 miles north of Saugus, CA, 8 miles north off of Copper Hill Rd., at 33951 San Francisquito Canyon Road. "A Place to Shoot" offers several ranges - from pistol to high-power rifle. This shooting area is operated by concessionaire, and eye and ear protection is required for all entering the Range.

Open Thursday through Monday. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Call (661) 296-5552 for hours of operation and fee information www.aplacetoshoot.net.

                Burro Canyon Shooting Park
Burro Canyon Shooting Park is located one mile east of the junction of Highway 39 and the East Fork Road, north of the city of Azusa, CA and Interstate 210. Open Thursday through Monday. No alcoholic beverages, tracer or steel core ammunition is allowed. Call (626) 910-1344 for hours of operation and fee information.

A listing of additional shooting areas/facilities may be found by visiting the National Shooting Sports Foundation's web site. "

Los Padres is a little better -

                  "Target Shooting
Recreational target shooting is another popular activity. Target shooters should contact their local Ranger District office for information on where target shooting is allowed. Do not discharge firearms from a road, across a road, across a body of water, or within 150 yards of a campground or inhabited area. Respect private property. Use paper targets. Do not use trees, signs, fence posts, glass, plastics or appliances as targets. Always clean up after yourself....pack out all litter. Recreational target shooting may be prohibited during fire season. "

Sorry to thread jack a bit here...

I know this subject has been but I would like some clarification.

Assuming I just want to carry for protection. No target shooting.

Angeles National Forest/ San Bernardino NF/Cleavland NF:

                          1. Are campgrounds OK for Loaded Open carry/ CCW?
                          2. When hiking on NF trails is it OK to LOC? (Does 12031(f) near roads, streams, bodies of water, etc. apply?)
                          3. Has anyone hiked the trail to the "Bridge to Nowhere" and are firearms allowed?

I did some searching and I'm seeing some mixed answers and it's confusing.
I know State Parks and National Parks firearms are generally prohibited. When it comes to National Forest's in Southern California there are state and local laws to look out for. I just want some clear cut answers with citations if possible.

                          Thank you.
