    Shooting on BLM Land

So I found this site, it gives a general map outline of BLM land and from what I've heard thats where recreational shooting is legal, or the discharge of weapon is legal, as well as open carry is legal.

Im working on getting a CCW, I know I cant do ccw drills from a concealed holster, but I just recently picked up the gun I want to carry and still don't feel totally confident. I can't really do drills that involve putting myself under 'stress' in an indoor shooting range, so Im here asking the veterans, is this map accurate?

I still plan on calling the authorities ahead of time to find out if I may or may not shoot, specifically near a blm spot near my home in Orange. Any suggestions are well appreciated.

There are a lot of seasonal closures to BLM land due to fire danger. There was a post on this here recently.

There's an iphone app called Public Lands that's really useful. It has different overlays for google maps, so you know exactly where you are in relation to land ownership.

If you're in San Bernardino County there is a map that tells you which areas are open to shooting and/or night shooting, which areas aren't, which are open only to shotgun hunting etc.

I'd download the PDF it's a lot easier to read the map then to try to on your browser.

If you're a newer shooter and are going to practice drawing (and reholstering) from concealment, for God's sake take someone with you in case you shoot yourself in the leg or foot. In fact, it's never a good idea to shoot in remote, designated shooting areas by yourself because you could be robbed.

One more thing: Even if someone is with you, a shooting buddy, whatever, and you have both agreed on a cold firing line to then head downrange, take your concealed carry weapon with you, loaded, when you go downrange to administer your targets. This is a time when most shooters are vulnerable to a robbery of their firearms and gear that was left at the shooting bench, table, truck tailgate, whatever.

When in BLM designated shooting areas, always be armed. Always. And always shoot into a backstop! never over, as we have seen up in Mojave... some dumb s.o.b.s put vodka bottles on TOP of the berm and were shooting at them. There's a roadway that descends a canyon beyond that target area. Idiots!

Thank you for this information, I am planning to always take a buddy, someone I really trust who has firearms experience and hes prior military as well as blood relative.

As for the second part, I suspected this as well, I was watching a video where something similar took place, not to mention I have been mugged before so I have that alert feeling being alone in a secluded environment.

But I will definitely take your advice, keep a gun on me loaded and vehicle locked and keys in my pocket. I always unload not in use firearms before going down range to set up targets and such. But ill be sure to express caution.'

I guess it's a good thing I picked up USCCA membership then.

I doubt there is open land near Orange, that's legal to shoot. Make sure map is up to date.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I would suggest you INVEST in a couple tactical handgun classes from an established firearms school / academy.

                          Fire danger?

I went to Berdoo Canyon for the first time back in Jan or Feb and was planning to go tomorrow, May 12. It is a good thing that I called BLM because they said no shooting. I would have been arrested.

What is the fire hazzard in that area? I didn't see much that could catch on fire?

Thanks. That was a bit of a rant and I was concerned it might not go over well.

I've been to Berdoo Canyon a bunch within the last year, but the last time I was there was in March... the place is trashed. We bring our targets and take them with us when we leave (PVC frames and paper). Still, I did not know it is now closed. News to me. I might be in Palm Desert next week. If the Berdoo designated shooting area is indeed shut down for whatever reason, this is a YUGE disappointment.

You're right, Slater; I can't really see a wildfire spreading rapidly through there. Veg is pretty sparse. Maybe the crap that gets left behind by lazy and irresponsible shooters is the reason it's closed. Who knows!
