    Is Anodizeing illegal?

I had an AR lower Anodized about 5 years ago with no problem.. When did this change?

It may be "illegal" but not from any sense of firearms law. I... blah blah blah... Who knows.

You must take it to ffl for anodizing or be present while done at unlicensed facility. Lots of posts on this.

So then it is a firearms law thing? I'm such a silly ****...

          What about Parkerizing, then?

Coating or plating a firearm, or just the receiver of a firearm, is an act of "Gunsmithing" and requires the service provider to hold an FFL if the weapon is left in their care.

Not many Anodizers have a FFL, even less want to open themselves up to the inspections from DOJ or ATF. They have enough problems with EPA and OSHA breathing down their necks.

Run it thru the dishwasher to degrease and get a rattle can.

Anodizing is fairly easy to do yourself.

I did my 1911 and it turned out ok! I just followed a youtube video.

You need battery acid, and an old battery charger. Die bath is optional. And you seal/harden it by boiling it in a pot on the stove.
