Buying from a private seller.

Hello calguns, I have a quick question. When you are buying from a private seller how do you know for (1) the gun isnt stolen, or (2) the gun you are buying (off roster or otherwise) was brought here/purchased here legaly. When the gun shop fills out the dros info on the computer does it run a instant check on the firearm? Thanks for any clarification.

Since the seller has to provide ID, it has been very rare for stolen guns to show up at a transfer.

And the check on the firearm happens at DOJ sometime during the 10-day wait; the result is ordinarily not reported back until after the 10 days.

If the gun is stolen, it will be flagged by the DOJ during the 10 day wait.
Unfortunately, at that point, cash has already been traded (and likely spent by the seller), so it may be difficult to get your money back...

But generally, stolen guns are sold in the Walmart parking lot where ID is not required. Nobody wants their ID to be attached to a stolen gun through the DROS.

Now... If the seller wants to meet on the QT to "avoid the 10 day wait for you", that's a major red flag... could be someone who is prohibited, or it could be a sting operation.

Yeah i would never purchase a gun that hasent gone thru dros. The main Reason i asked was ive had some sketchy stories given to me by people with off roster firearms.

I only buy from stand up people, with good Ratings and read their post history to get an idea of the person before buying.

I generally do a little research on the person if possible. iTrader ratings and other posting by the person usually clue me in.

How did you get your money back? I assume the gun is returned to the original owner.
