Thanks to AudioPhil2 for a great range day

I'm posting to leave Phil a public thanks for his Arizona hospitality. Not only does he have a creative and fun range setup and all of the proper equipment properly organized; he is a genuinely friendly guy who is fun to spend a day with at the range.

And thanks to CessnaPilot for enabling my retro rifle's night fire with period correct optics (no emitter, so legal even if we had been in California).

If you want to escape from California for a day or seven, I recommend heading to Phil's range.

I would love to blow up some cacti with tracers.

That's a cool night shot... I didn't realize there were any stars left in the sky. Phil's a super great guy and I'd love to head that way for a visit in the future for a taste of freedom. He has been my goto guy for years for magazine and rifle purchases. He's second to none as a middleman for your rifle purchases.

Thanks Milsurp. I had a lot of fun and that retro setup was very exciting to see and use in action.

I'm already looking into NV camcorders so I can get better video at night.

You just missed the heat. It warmed up pretty fast so you got out here in very good weather.

That's what all the city boys want to do. Saguaros reproduce slowly and grow even more slowly; that's why they're protected. If you are lucky enough to find one on public land, chances are it'll be scarred from being used as a target.

Once in a while, a cactus gets lucky and falls on a shooter but that's not why cactus plugging is illegal.

              Dang, I had no idea.

The saguaros are protected but there are lots of other cactus.

Those saguaros are very delicate. I don't like walking near them since they fall over pretty easy. I had to cut one up that fell over the road that goes to our property. Wish I brought a chainsaw because an ax is not enough. Under the green it is just like a typical tree.

Most of the saguaros where I shoot are in great condition since only locals really go near them and most are on private property. Our range was designed to keep stray gunfire away from them.

I was a little disappointed that I only saw 1 scorpion that night at the range. I brought one of my UV flashlights to get a count and I only found one for milsurp.

Most cacti grow VERY slowly and it takes years or decades to grow in a very harsh environment. About the only cactus that people wouldn't have a problem with you shooting is a Cholla (jumping cactus). Mostly because it's a pest and not very friendly.

Some might say it's OK to shoot a *****ly (Prikly - are you kidding me mods?) Pear, but I would rather eat one than shoot one. Too many ugly Prikly [sic] Pears exist because people shoot them or hack at them. Those scars ruin an otherwise beautiful cactus.

Shooting a Saguaro will get you arrested. They're protected for good reason.

Tracers are a big no no in most arid climates due to fire danger.

Sorry to have derailed the thread with a cactus hugger post. Back on topic- audiophil2, thanks for being a great asset to the firearm owners of California and a great asset to the Cal Guns community. I appreciate your dedication to helping keep the Second Amendment alive (on life support but still got a pulse) in this state.

The summer is the rainy season in AZ. We always wait until just after a rain to shoot tracers.

I popped off a few .22 tracers for milsurp.

Even regular rounds will start fires when it is really hot. We had some brush start smoldering last fall and had to put it out with an extinguisher and dirt. It is obvious at night to see the sparks off plates but not in daylight.
