Also be aware lead contamination in the soil will be an issue, especially if its near any creeks/streams/rivers/lakes/ponds/etc. Water drainage is a big deal in California, one of the reasons the Anthony Chabot Gun Range in the East Bay was shut down a few years ago.

Private land = Eat my shorts Gavin. Especially when you can't see anything from the roadways and it's way out in the Hills.

THIS!!!! i have a friend that has 140 acres that sits at the outskirts of town(county land not city) but has a million dollar housing development right next to his property......We call the sheriff, tell them we are shooting. Neighbors call and complain.....Sheriff tells them to pound sound!

We have had the sheriffs come out at 7 am to tell us not to dove hunt because the neighbors are complaining.....We tell them we have the land owners permission, hunting license, leave us alone. Nothing they can do about it.

My property is part of a large ranch that was appropriated by the govt to pay back taxes. It has CC&Rs that cover such things. Luckily we can shoot all we want!

all good feedback I will have to contact the code and zoning officials. We have public and private ranges in our town. But id like to have my own private range to setup my own targets/scenarios and possibly rent to different entities for training and classes. I will let you know what I find out. I am thinking of somewhere between Kern and Inyo counties, lots of open land and mountains to back up to.

I worked at Chabot for 17yrs and it was my distinct impression that the East Bay Regional Park District shut Chabot down because their board were a pack of hoplophobes who hated guns & shooters. They made a bunch of noises about lead leakage into the watershed and the costs of lead abatement but the bottom line is that was a smoke screen to obscure their real agenda, which was to shut the range down. Very disingenuous, very sneaky, very bravo sierra.

I know of someone that has done this on his 5 acre residence. I was a guest on this property several years ago and shot there with a group of about 10-ish of their friends and family. It was unincorporated land, surrounded by trees and mountains.

Chabot was my favorite, go-to range in the Bay Area. The crew there was excellent. You had to know something was fishy when EBRPD asked for a list of registered members. What did that have to do with lead leakage? Nothing. Yeah, any rumors of environmental issues are BS. Otherwise, every outdoor range in CA would be shut down by now. This was the result of EBRPD anti gun board shutting down the most popular outdoor range in the Bay Area. There is a whole thread on Calguns regarding the closure. I am still sad today about this range being shut down.

If you have neighbors then if range within 150 yards of occupied dwelling then you must have permission or no shooting or hunting. On our property neighbors are couple hundred yards away. ur property is 6 acres backed up to national forest.

Been to two private ranges. Both have no homes within a mile minimum from the range so no one would ever hear anything. Outdoor range is ideal but shooting after 11am gets too warm even in the shade.

Coyote is next. There is a couple threads about its soon to be last days. Same thing, anti 2A county parks department bought the land under their lease.

I learned to shoot at Chabot and loved it. My kids learned to shoot shotguns at Coyote and we shoot there often.
Wilson Protector .45, Springer 9mm Loaded, Franchi Instinct SL .12ga. and some other cool stuff for the kiddos...

I have unlimited shooting access on the hunting lease I have. We have two ranges set up out to 900 yards with the opportunity to go as far as we want. Don’t buy, lease. Talk to your local rancher and just ask for the back 40. It’s definitely possible. I lease the hunting rights to a working cattle ranch and they could care less as long as we keep everything safe. If all you want is a range it should be fairly easy. They generally have all the equipment to plow a little section and build a berm or two. Get a few friends together and offer a decent amount. Keep plenty of fire equipment on hand.

I have a 100 yard range set up in the clearing in the woods at the very top of my property.

You have good laws there. Wish I could say the same about AZ.

The best private range I've ever seen was Paul Miller's. Beautiful house, a bunch of IPSC bays right in the backyard, and rifle and shotgun ranges across the road. It's right against federal land so nobody can buy next door and starting crap.
