There's now a new hurdle on the path to buy a gun. It all depends on what stamp you have on the right corner of your California driver license.
Nearly two months ago the California DMV added the Real ID. The DMV said there was no need to rush to apply because the ID doesn't take effect until October 2020.
But if you renewed your license after January 22nd and you didn't opt for the Real ID, you can't buy a gun.
In late January, California began offering a federal compliant Real ID driver license or ID card. It's a necessary card after October 2020 to check in at the airport or enter military bases and federal facilities.
But Jake Belemjian owner of the Firing Line gun shop in Clovis says if you recently renewed your license and didn't opt for the Real ID you can't buy a gun.
"It's important that everyone understands that yes the State of California regulates firearms but so does the federal government."
If your new license reads, federal limits apply, you can't buy a gun until you get the Real ID.
If your current license has a bear in the right-hand corner, you're good for now. The Firing Line hasn't had to turn any gun buyer away so far. "I would say within the last couple of months the number of those federal limits apply, licenses that we're seeing
is going up. It hasn't become a problem yet but it's only a matter of time before it becomes a problem."
Belemjian says the rule applies to gun owners and even people with permits to carry a concealed weapon.
If you don't have a Real ID or your driver license doesn't have the bear in the corner you need to visit the DMV.
