A few random Gun - Range - ammo questions.

    1. Do any of you keep a log book for each of your firearms? I keep a little notebook in my range bag and for each firearm, I will add info such as date, what ammo I ran through it (Brand, type etc) and an accurate round count, also if there were any hiccups or if it all ran smoothly then when the firearm was cleaned. Anyone else or am I the only OCD nut here? I mainly do it to keep a record if I ever end up selling one of them, I like to have a full history to give to the buyer if I did ever sell, I do the same for my vehicles.

    2. So in Ca now, it is an issue to buy and sell ammo obviously. I know this may be a stupid question, and I think I know the answer but wanted to ask anyway. I was at the range a couple weeks ago and threw a box of Aluminum cased ammo in my ammo box for the range to try out in my pistol, never used it before. So after some shooting I decided to give the aluminum stuff a go and realized I grabbed the wrong box, I have a 9mm and this stuff is .45. I do not even own a .45, Not sure why I picked this up way back when but I did. I was thinking, I can't sell it, I do not want to just give it away, but what about trading it. If I am at the range and a guy next to me has a 9 and a 45, Would it be legal to just trade ammo, Trade him my box of .45 for a box of his 9mm? I am thinking no, but being at the range and if the ammo is used at the range? I don't know. If not, I'll just hold onto it, I will end up with a .45 eventually.

    3. Retrieving brass. I like to make a day of it at the outdoor range, but not crazy about crawling around in the dirt picking hundreds of scattered casings. But I do, I like to leave the area spotless. A buddy of mine has one of those fancy brass retrievers on the stick that looks like a modified egg beater but at over $40, more than I want to spend. You guys have any dirt cheap alternatives? maybe there is a cheaper product I do not know about, I have a picker upper claw but that would take forever picking up one case at a time. I was thinking maybe a stand-up dustpan and broom into a bucket then just sifting out all the dirt later? Just curious if there is a trick of the trade or something.

    1:
    No, and probably not.

    3:
    An old sheet or tarp.

There are some "make your own" capture devices if they are still on YouTube.
Kind of like an extended butterfly net.

Edit: They are still up, plenty of choices. I searched "make a brass catcher" within YouTube.

I keep round counts and spring changes in the notepad in my cell phone. If a gun doesn't care for a particular brand of ammo I add that as well.

          1. i video tape each session and then go back and review it, entering everything into a database with images of each target.
(actually, i do no such thing)

          2. i think i read something about range transfers being OK as long as the ammo doesn't leave the range. i could be wrong so i would double-check this.

          3. cheap plastic or canvas tarp.
there are gizmos you can wear or attach but i can't recommend them unless you have some extreme needs to keep your brass off the ground.

                Depending on your range.
At Angeles. I would not ask anybody to trade.ammo with.
Too many times I have been there and a cop shooting next to me. They do bring their friends and family to shoot with.
If the RO sees his firearm, they ask for ID. Only LEO can keep their firearm.
CCW is not suppose to have their firearm on the line.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I have a log book but I don't usually bring it with me. It is mainly for observations of the rifle's performance and handload records. I probably should, but don't, have separate books for each firearm. They are mainly antiques or milsurp so standards are out the window, as are round counts.

!. No, not really. I have a tag on each AR with the gun info including sn and the makes of various components on it as well what it is zeroed with.

                    2. Any deals you make at the range is between you and whoever. I RSO at the range, I don't do DOJ work there. Ammo now bought at our range is meant to be consumed at the range on the same trip as when you bought it.

                    3. We greatly appreciate it when you sweep up your brass. Your brass is your brass to keep. We will let you keep other people's brass if you have their permission, if not then it is our brass. We have brooms at every other station and brooms with dustpans located behind the benches. We also have magnets for use to pick up steel cases with. We do sell the brass. We actually hand sort out the steel, nickel, aluminum cases, live ammo and the dirt that gets swept up with the cases. We don't use the egg beater type case retrievers, the brooms and magnets work better and are much cheaper.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Too many firearms and shoot too much to worry about round count. I think people make too big a deal about it.

I would just trade or sell it and not worry about it for the ammo.

Yes I pick up brass. I have a tool from Dillon that works well on hard surfaces and use a rake and pan for other. Dump it into a bucket and sort when I have time at home.

If you sell on CalGuns, I'm pretty sure your gun has just about 200 rounds through it.
