    Is this CA compliant?

    Hi All,

Want to make sure I can't become a felon for our ridiculous gun laws here in Commifornia. Is this flash suppressor/muzzle brake CA compliant. I can't even tell the difference between what is legal and what isn't. If this isn't legal, any suggestions on a replacement?

        Right.

To paraphrase the law, "Any barrel device that is designed to re-direct flash, OR IN EFFECT DOES RE-DIRECT FLASH."

That right there is a legal mine field.

If the name or description anywhere has the word "flash" in it then forget about it.
Even if it is marketed as a brake only, the legal waters are somewhat murky.

It is perfectly legal on a fixed mag rifle, if you are going featureless, it is considered a feature.

              Yep ^

Remove if you want to go featureless.

If not, check out the FC Hook to make a fixed mag.

That is your factory all OEM A2 FS. Comes with firearms when purchased new in 48 states, including California.

Hawaii and MA if I recall do not come with these on any of their ARs from the factory. California they do.

Now with that out of the way, because I look at every state when it comes to gun laws, in California it’s considered a feature ( we all know it’s really not since it’s a factory part and not an upgrade of any sort). Remove it if you’re going featureless and it’s legal with a fixed mag.

That hides flash. Therefore if your a sniper nobody can see you.

Cheapest option would be to install a thread protector. This may also be the safest option as there is no way a simple thread protector could be construed as redirecting flash in any way.

Or if you buy something from a reputable company that is specifically marketed as a brake, not a flash hider, then you should be ok.

For what it’s worth, I read somewhere that a primary difference between a brake and a flash hider is the size of the exit hole. A flash hider opens up, so the exit hole is significantly larger than the bullet size, which I believe allows more powder to burn before leaving the muzzle device and reduces flash. whereas the hole in a brake stays small, just slightly larger than the bullet size, redirecting gasses thru the ports and reducing recoil, but not flash.
