I had a S&W CHIEFS .38 Special that was loaded for over 30 years in a dresser drawer that belonged to my father, I took it to the range and tried to fire it and had two "dud rounds" the primers didnt ignite.

for defense use, you definitely need to rotate your mags & ammo, maybe once every few years fire the old ammo, dont let it sit for decades maybe every 3 - 5 years

Function test both the HD firearm and it's ammunition at least once per season and rotate your stock of HD cartridges doing so. You might wish to go shooting at least twice a month and with additional guns.

Even if I don't shoot all my guns, I check them once a month and do a basic cleaning and lube every six months...

Thanks. I did cycle the mags, swapping the ammo into my spare mags. All mags working fine, as a recent range outing showed. Only issue is with ammo, which can't be shot at range (only full metal jacket allowed) .

Surprised there are any ranges that don't allow JHP defense ammo. How would you test HD ammo?

Although there's no problem with 'old ammo' within reason, but I routinely should a couple mags of my HD ammo just to ensure nothing changed in my firearm that creates problems with it.
