I’m looking at buying a bear creak AR in 7.62x39 for 499

It’s easier to just buy a complete upper than to gut and rebuild a perfectly good 5.56 upper.

Magazines keep me from going this route, the PWS piston upper would be my choice if mags were 100% reliable

My two 762x39 guns with binary triggers are reliable. I call each one 'Ol Reliable.

Side note. I do not have the enhanced firing pin in either gun. Just extra power wolf hammer spring. Barrel bolt and magazine is all you need. While your at it, get an adjustable gas block.
I like ASC and Products magazines. I also have promag and AR stoner mags. They all work with no issues and half of them are 10/30s that I unpinned.

Heavy buffer spring helps everything go into battery andswill tame the gas if you don't go with an adjustable gas block.

Just buy a compete 7.62x59 upper... I got my ARStoner upper from midway when it was 199 shipped. You can still find BCA Uppers for 225 or so shipped.

I did install enhanced firing pin, polished the feed ramps. Have had no issues with feeds or fails to fire. The 10 round mags kind of suck. But, ever in a free state, try the 30rd banana style, they feed much better!

                      7.62 x 39 upper

I purchase a complete 7.62x39 upper, replace extra power hammer spring, enhanced firing pin, use 10rd ASC mag, use steel ammo function 100%

Built mine, it's better that way. Then you can pick the quality stuff.

Besides the entire up and BCG...

Aren't the mag wells different for a 5.56 versus a 7.62? Same for buffer system? Is a stronger hammer spring required?

Same for 7.62x39. Different for 7.62x51.

As mentioned above, upper is the same. Barrel and bolt are different.
I didn't need stronger hammer spring. Just enhanced firing pin.

Just this weekend, I ran a PSA 7.62 upper with CPD 10 round mags on my standard AR lower. Upper was shipped dry, so I took the BCG apart and oiled it before I shot it. The thing ran like a champ. Very fun upgrade from .223 that I normally shoot.
