Looks like you've found an Arisaka Type 38, good find!

Should clean up really, really nice. But don't even think about using steel wool or even worse, sand paper!

Go post this in the C&R section, they'll be able to give you LOADS more info.

Edit: looks like it might be a type 38 instead of a type 99, even cooler!

I can’t seem to find much numbers on this thing at all
I just found 673 on the underside of the bolt
And maybe a 8 240 on the left side of the receiver

Looks to me like a type 38 but maybe this thread should be moved to the C&R section for some more expert opinions. Sweet find.

                "last ditch effort" arisaka ?

                Wooden buttpad ?
Back of bolt crude, not engraved ?
No bipod, no aircraft sights on rear sight?

Those old Japanese rifles are good shooters. Clean it up and enjoy.

Might be a Japanese Training rifle. Only meant to be used with blanks.
Last Sunday I was at a local flea market when I passed by a military vendor. As an avid collector of U.S. WWII gear, I decided to stop by to have a quick look. Turns out he didn't have anything interesting; a lot of the gear was Vietnam-era aside from a few patches. As I was turning to...

During early part of the 20th century The Japanesegovernment did a lot of things that can affect us now. Such as producing bothBattle rifles and Training rifles that while they were cut to the same caliberthey could not use the same ammunition. The Type 38 will be the example that I usehere...

What Roger said. Make sure it isn't a trainer! If it is, never shoot it. If it isn't, shoot it all you want provided you can find 6.5 Japanese ammo. Good find.

Thanks for the links on the trainer rifles, it helped me realize why there aren’t any marks. Now I’m pretty sure it is a trainer especially since it only has the one hole in top of the receiver where a real rifle has two. I’m still going to try and clean it up a bit being it’s still a peace of history

Please be careful with how you clean it up, if you clean it up at all; ask the C&R section on how to clean it properly without destroying the patina.

Just as a little aside to the people new to Arisakas, this rifle has one of the strongest actions of any bolt rifle designs made, so it was interesting to hear that many vets damned the rifle as poorly made and blamed it for numerous accidents after the war. Those who did not know of training rifles blamed poorly made last ditch rifles.

It turns out that many training rifles were brought back by vets who couldn't read Japanese and who couldn't tell that the rifle wasn't a regular battle rifle. When they tried to fire it, the no bolt lug arrangement did a fair amount of damage to the user. I am not guessing that happens very often now days, but it is something to worry about if you acquire a "strange" Arisaka. The 6.5mm Arisaka was often converted to a hybrid 6.5mm Roberts (reaming the chamber to fit the 257 Roberts) due to lack of available 6.5 x 50 Japanese ammo. The rifles are often not marked with the change. When a person used 6.5 Japanese in such converted rifles, they got a surprise and a highly expanded 6.5mm case. (the one person I met who did this was shocked, but not hurt, not sure if people get injured in this type of incident.)

                              I will make a nice wall-hanger OP.

As Surplus-Addict said above, be careful not to lose the patina when you clean it.
