I had the same happen in 2016 trying to buy a .22LR upper. Even had a couple rounds of e-mails, where I sent them a lot of info on the specific PC etc. to show that uppers (especially .22LR ones) were fine. They wanted to follow their fear-induced policy instead of have my business, so I took it to Midway.

I had (honestly) spent $1K in the year leading up that discussion, with Optics and a couple of their sister companies. Since then, $0.

I just spend my money where the vendors want my business.

Plenty of other places to buy parts and accessories. I wrote off Optics Planet a while back too.

I’ve found it on another online retailer. This time I’ll call first. I’ll use the gift cards for something else and be done with them.

Suggestion . . . When you use the gift cards, leave a note (if there is a comments box for your order) that this is your last purchase from them because . . .

Make sure they know they lost another CA customer due to their over-the-top anti-CA gun owner policies. Maybe mention which of their competitors will get your future business.

Different companies have different risk profiles and policies and they can be stricter than the underlying law.

For example, many gun shops won't ship at all to CA because of the extra paperwork and because they don't want the hassle. Similarly, we know that some companies that were following the law got sued by CA anyway. Remember magazine kits? It was up to the state to figure out whether people were violating the law, not up to the seller to stop selling a completely legal (at the time) product. Yet, they ended up spending a lot of money to handle the situation.

If it's not worth it, companies won't do it. Instead of blaming them, blame the CA politicians and laws. (This is different from CTD price gouging during low availability periods. That is completely valid reason to boycott - it has nothing to do with risk analysis.)

I'll only buy optics from them, they do offer really good discounts. but couldn't get body armor or even a flash hider from them.

I guess that’s part of the CA DOJ plan to make it so difficult through a process of intimidation to obtain perfectly legal parts that companies refuse to do business here. At least many companies will state next to the item “Will not Ship to CA”. I’m still going to take my business else where, there fault or not.

totally agree with you, but Optics Planet have been doing this for quite awhile now, nothing recent that i know of. I DO appreciate that they try to contact you to let you know they can't complete your order. I've had issues with other vendors who didn't even say anything until a month later when i called them wondering why my order hasn't shipped.

Well Optics Planet called back and said it was the the manufacturer that would not allow them to ship to CA because it has a flash hider making it an assault weapon. I cited the section(s) in the PC that exempts rimfire, but again he cited their agreement with the manufacturer.

I ran into something like that with Palmetto.
Really great price on 50 cal ammo cans but they said they couldn't ship to CA because the manufacturer had a a no sales to CA policy.
WTF? Still shop with them though. I don't fault them for other people's policies.
