Anyone know if Melonite coating/treatment (on steel of course) can be painted over? I was thinking of using Duracoat, with which I'm pretty familiar.

Oh. Bummer.
Not a huge deal. I'm not even talking about a gun part exactly. I was thinking of buying a Pig Saddle since they seem to be a nice handy tool. But the manufacturer now Melonites the Pig Saddles instead of painting them green, tan, or whatever.
I have read that Melonite is a great protective treatment, but I wouldn't mind giving the device another color at some point. It would not bother me too much if it chips a little here and there. But if the paint is going to flake off from just being touched, I would not bother. And I wouldn't spend a dime removing such a nice coating.
Earlier I wrote to the manufacturer to ask about paint adhesion. They will probably say the same thing you guys did.Comment

Melonite is not a coating per se.
If it chips then you probably got a poorly done component.
Explained here.
