Check if a firearm is registered ??

Hi fellow Calgunners , maybe this has been asked before , but is there a website to check if a gun/riffle is registered ?? and to whom it's registered to ?? I was handed down a riffle that's been in the family and I'm really not sure to whom it's registered to . I want to register it to my name of course and hopefully you guys can help direct me the right way ... thanks in advance..

Long guns were not "registered" until 2014 I believe. So if the gun has been in the family since before that date, and never transferred through a dealer there is a good chance that it is not "registered" at all. And no there is no website to check that is available to the pubic.

Depending upon how you came to be in possession of it, will determine how to proceed to getting it into your name. If it came from your either your parents or grandparents a simple OPLAW form will suffice, provided all concerned are Ca residents.

If it came from some other family member that Ca does not consider direct family, or out of state it need to be transferred through a FFL. That may get a bit sticky if you are already in possession of it.

Librarian, what about passed down from an uncle, dad's brother to be exact. Hypothetically, Does he need to give it to dad, and Dad to me, etc. Or can Uncle pass it down.

Grandparent to child or grandchild - parent to child - or viceversa - ONLY
No family transfer even between siblings

M1NM has it - Uncle (presuming he is a CA resident) should PPT the gun through a CA FFL.

Yes, and yes.

OPLAW can be submitted through CFARS, VOLREG too, and that web site is the point of 'assault weapon' registration.

I've never signed up for CFARS because I have not needed it. I don't believe a registered user can see anything about any other users.

'Unauthorized user' is 'somebody stole my userid and password!'

01-01-2014 = Intra-familial transfers of longs are required to be registered.

If the firearm* was transferred before the starting date, then it did not need to be registered.
*Handguns transferred before 12-31-1992.
*Long guns transferred before 12-31-2013.
