Where'd the 21 limit start?

Every time there is another shooting, the anti gun people seem to focus on a specific issue. After Vegas it was bump stocks. I haven't kept track so I can't say for sure, but it seems like there's a consistent pattern: A shooting happens. The left calls for more gun control in general. Somewhere in there people start focusing on something like "assault weapons", handguns, "high capacity" magazines, etc. The new fad is attacking the Ar-15 specifically.
I generally try to stay away from the media and TV in general so I'm not exactly sure where it started. Why are the anti gun people suddenly so intent on raising the age limit for long guns to 21? That's their magic bullet after this shooting, but nobody can actually explain why/if it would do anything.

It wont do anything to lower crime as is the case with virtually all gun restrictions. The anti gun proponents goal is total disarmament and they are willing to do it anyway they can and by taking as many steps as they have to.

We’ll let ‘em drive when they’re 16, vote when they’re 18 ( both potentially more dangerous) and carry a gun into battle when they’re 18. But have the ability to buy a rifle? Hmmmm.

In the 60s it was the cheap 'Saturday Night Special' handguns as the bane of American society. I remember the gun control types saying ' we will never come after your rifles'. So much for that.

It started when the U.S. government told states, "If you don't raise the drinking age to 21, you ain't getting a dime of federal highway funds." That was what, 35 years ago?

It's the age limit that was set by Federal laws about 50 years ago.
^Initially proposed with the 21 age limit for all firearms, but compromises were made that granted a person age 18-20 to be able to get rifles/shotguns.

Federal laws prohibits a FFL from transferring a firearm to a person under the age of 21, unless the firearm is a Title 1 Rifle or Title 1 Shotgun then the minimum age is 18. [18 USC 922(b)(1)]
^This is why a FFL can not legally transfer a Title 1 Handgun, Title 1 Other, and any Title 2 firearm to a person age 18-20.


What the anti-gun groups want is to amend Federal laws by removing the part that allows a FFL to transfer a Title 1 Rifle and Title 1 Shotgun to a person age 18-20.

(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver—
(1) any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than eighteen years of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is other than a shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a shotgun or rifle, to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than twenty-one years of age

Simple solution: Negotiate age of gun ownership to voting age - the libs will never go for that. They need the 18yr-old voting block.

Scotus and the Heller decision is what has really screwed us in the end.

To allow that decision to stand is unconstitutional and irresponsible. It codified the legality of passing any sort of gun restrictions you want as long as the decider of what is "reasonable restrictions" says those are.

One states reasonable restrictions is another states total ban. Now we have 50 different 2nd amendments.

I have no issue with raising the age to 21 for buying any gun. I also have no issue with 21 being the age for drinking, smoking or anything else. The fact is that KIDS today are not as mature. In the 60's, 70's and 80's 18, 19 and 20 yr old's were out of school and working or in college living on their own. (Yes - few college kids lived at home.) They had TRUE responsibility over their lives and grew up. Today, 18, 19 and 20 yr old's live at home, don't work, have everything given to them and don't grow up. i.e. 18, 19 and 20 yr old's today are NOT as mature as kids before.

Second, if kids are still in HS at 19 then damn right I want them not buying guns.

Now - I have no issue with exceptions to the rule. i.e. If military, if LEO, maybe an advanced training class (a real training class of multiple days - not the crap you do now to get your firearm permit or even a CCW.)

The truth is I dont want some kid that decided to come out of his parents basement one day after three years of playing video games to be able to go down and buy ANY GUN. I have seen some of these kids at the range and they are damn scary.......
