How to sell

I am considering selling a gun in the appropriate forum here on Calguns and not having done that before, I have a few questions regarding the procedure. I appreciate any help.

What general cautions should I be aware of before listing, or selling?

Shipping. I prefer not to ship, though I can see that it might be better to sell to a larger pool. How would I ship a handgun and how is the transfer done? Is it generally easy and safe to ship? How is payment made?

What liability do I have if the buyer does not pass the background check? Is there any way to determine a qualified buyer before? Do I get my item back without cost?

Payment. I prefer cash in person, as I don’t have Paypal or anything like that, but I don’t like the idea of walking out of a store with a wad of cash in my pocket. How do you handle that part? I thought I might meet the buyer at my bank first, deposit the money, and then go to the FFL.

Does a buyer know my name and address if I don’t provide it?

Anything else I should know about the process?

In your post to sell, list all the terms that you want. You may want to set a refund amount in the event the seller is unable to pass a background check. A sincere buyer may want to negotiate some of your terms and may provide you options to reduce your concerns. Meeting in person at a FFL business, should be safe. I don't recall anyone writing about having an issue between a buyer and a seller. Having a large amount of cash, to me is no concern. Just make plans to go directly to your bank to deposit the funds. Being paid in cash alleviates having to wait for a check to clear, and I would not allow a buyer to begin transferring a firearm that I own until the funds are in my possession, and a check is not having possession of funds. As a buyer, I am no going to give a prospective seller cash at his bank, and then meet him at the FFL dealers. I would be concerned about the seller making a wrong turn and getting lost.

The FFL typically will not give your address and info to the other. They make a copy with that removed. Dont sweat the details. Call the buyer to set up the meet. I think of the call as my 'is he normal' call. Remind the buyer to bring his proof of residency and FSC and that the address must match their CDL. Cash only, buyer pays fees. Meet at LGS. Start with PPT. Shipping is expensive to buyer.

Thanks for the pointers. Good point about making sure the buyer brings proper documentation. Phone screening first is also a good way to get a feel for the situation before moving forward. Stipulation of terms regarding a non-qualified buyer sounds like a good idea.

No buyer is going to meet at your bank. Meet at FFL, and after the gun has been inspected and paperwork started (meaning you have produced ID to the FFL) the buyer should hand you the cash.

It looks like you bought a gun from someone here in 2014, so it pretty much should go the same way.

I did purchase from a member and it was great, but being a seller presents different concerns. Just want to get more experienced opinions.

If your item is not on the roster, you can't ship it. Has to be face to face transfer through FFL.

Good idea to actually talk to the buyer on the phone to get a feel for them and confirm all the details instead of just relying on messages.

If you ship, it has to be sent overnight via private carrier (UPS) to the buyer's FFL. Get a copy of the FFL signed in blue or red ink and independently verify the information on it. Payment is more problematic without being face to face cash, as is if the buyer has a problem with your item, as is if the buyer doesn't pass DROS. Read their policy on shipping guns. Used to be it could only be done from a hub (not a contract store like UPS Store) and their package labeling requirements.

Don't worry so much about being paid in cash. If you've talked to the buyer and are meeting at a LGS to do the PPT, you aren't going to get robbed.

The paperwork has your name and address on it. They have never blacked it out on any transfer I've done and I've done a lot of them. I suppose you could ask them to if you're paranoid. If you're really paranoid, call them first and ask if they will do it before using them and finding out they won't.

Thanks for the insight. I see why many say no shipping, too much to do and some risk involved also. I think that there are enough members in the Bay Area to not have to offer shipping.

Not sure what I'm selling yet but all were bought local and I've seen the same items for sale on Calguns, so I assume they are still okay to transfer.

Remember, "Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement." Meaning they don't have to be on the Roster

A couple years back the BOF set all of the guns to expire at the first of year. I think this simplifies their bureaucracy and simpler for the gun manufacturers who have to pay their fee every year to maintain their guns on the Roster.

There've been a few panicked posts on CalGuns of those convinced that all handguns are going to fall off the list at the first of the year. Don't worry, the Manufacturers will pay their fee and it will all be OK.

I have seen some get bumped for literally years. There is currently a used Rock Island 38 snub on the marketplace for more than the Turner's non sale price.
