Registering AR Pistol as "Assault Weapon"

There seems to be a debate on SSE and if converting a firearm from single-shot to semi-automatic is still part of the manufacturing process or if it is a modification done AFTER the manufacturing process.

Has anyone had success in getting a serial number and registering any AR Pistol which was made in 2016?

Why anybody would want to register anything is a mystery to me? Why not just put a MAG lock on it and be done with it.

I have... I manufactured an 80% ar pistol as a single shot.. then sent the Vol Reg form to the DOJ as a single shot. Then later (prior to 2017) converted the firearm into semi automatic. Then applied for a new serial number per assault weapon registration regulations, and have successfully registered (with letter) the pistol as an assault weapon.

Does it matter if you never did a Vol Reg?
