    Next gun for safety

Ok, so I have the 18 1/2" barrell shotgun for home defense and and bought 24" barrell for it to actaully go try to shoot something beyond 15ft. I now own a pistol for me and the mrs as of today

Now what? I am covered for close quarters, breakins, zombies, what not, but what about other armed combatants. I pray it never comes to that, but just in case. . .

What is a good rifle type option for me?

you want a rifle for self defence?

get a remington 700 so you can snipe those trying to break in to your house at 300-500 yards haha.

I don't think I'd be able to tell if they were going into my house, my neighbors house, or McDonalds at 300-500 yards!

OP- do you just want the rifle for home defense ONLY? If so I'd look into a carbine length AR15 or AR10 if you want the extra stopping power. However, I'd keep the shotgun as my top choice for in home defense over any rifle.

I appreciate the sarcasm. I am not talking about what I keep under my pillow in case the boogey man comes. I am talking about the next level of safety.

I am concerned about the food riots or whatever else might be on the horizon. What is the option if the doomsday happens and there are now 15 people in my house huddled together and a group of armed thieves advances on our now discovered location. My mossy with slugs is only so effective.

Are the small rifles at Big 5 worth looking into? Is there a simple option? Does it have to be an AR type? Can I have something to double as a hunting rifle? I am not a hunter so I am not looking at the latest greatest take down a grizzly from a mile sort of thing. Is there a common caliber easy to find?

+1 for AR type rifles in the zombie takeover situation -- interchangable parts, easy access to ammo, easy maintenance.

But what would I expect to pay and build one? Just in my browsing it seems that everyone has lots of questions about building AR types. I don't usually linger to read those threads so I am not sure. Is it a complicated endeavour?

How about slugs? You should be good up to 100 yards and it won't cost you another rifle.

M1A, Saiga, Mini-14, SUx-16CAca and MM AR/AK should all work well for a nice SHTF rifle.

SU-16CA, M1A, Saiga, or Mini-14. That way you don't have to worry about a mag lock.

Yeah, I have some slugs. Maybe need some more JIC. Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like the m1a or ARs are big money rifles. The Saigas I googled seemed reasonable. Can I find them?

Any value to the Big 5 rifles?

Which Big 5 rifle? They'll probably have Ruger Mini-14s and Mini-30s. Not bad guns, but really not significantly better than an SKS which should be cheaper. I'm not sure what other semi-automatic rifles Big 5 might sell, aside from overpriced M1 Carbines (not that you have to go semi-auto, but if it's for defense that's usually preferred).

Why not throw in a couple of .22 LR semi-automatic rifles.

For around the same cost as a cheaper pre-Obama AR you can get 2 - .22 LR semi-auto rifles, extra mags AND 10,000 rounds of ammo.

Mini 14 would be good in a situation where you have multiple targets coming at you from the front and right. You could shoot the targets in front and take out the targets on the right with the shell casings.
