As of 01-01-2000, semi-auto shotguns that do not have a fixed magazine are assault weapons. [PC 30515(a)(7)]

As of 08-01-2017, semi-auto shotguns with "bullet button" style magazine locks are considered assault weapons. [11 CCR 5470(d)]

If you legally acquired a semi-auto shotgun with a "bullet button" style magazine lock from 2001-2016, then you are granted an exemption to possess it until 07-01-2018.

Prior to 07-01-2018, one of the following must be done to a VEPR/Saiga shotgun with a "bullet button" style magazine lock:
    A. Register it as an assault weapon.
    B. Modify it so that it has a fixed magazine that can not be removed without disassembing the firearm's action or that is permanently attached to the firearm's magazine well.
    C. Make it into a manually operated shotgun. This can be done by removing the gas piston and plugging the gas block.
    D. Disassemble it into parts and never assemble it while in CA.
    E. Take it out-of-state for storage or to transfer it through an out-of-state FFL dealer.
    F. Sell it to a CA FFL dealer with an assault weapons permit.
    G. Surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

While in CA, in order to legally be able to advertise it for sale or transfer it, it must be made into a non-assault weapon.

Starting 08-01-2017, CA legal options to advertise it for sale or transfer it:
    Z. Modify it so that it has a fixed magazine that can not be removed without disassembing the firearm's action or that is permanently attached to the firearm's magazine well.
    Y. Make it into a manually operated shotgun. This can be done by removing the gas piston and plugging the gas block.
    X. Disassemble it into parts. Only the receiver is transferred through a CA FFL dealer and the rest of the parts go direct to the transfee. It is then on the transferee to make the firearm into a CA legal configuration (options Y or Z).

As for Option B, how would you be able to modify the Vepr to "break" the action? The thing is a Russian Tank....
Any thoughts on how do to this?
The other options of registering, fixed mag, single shot, etc....are not very palatable.....

Two methods for making an AK style firearm into a fixed magazine firearm...

        1. Permanently attach (weld/epoxy/rivet) a magazine into the firearm's magazine well.

        2. Install a device that prevents the magazine from being removed without disassembling the firearm's action.

Load/reload procedure for the above methods:
        1. Check to see if it's unloaded.
        2. Remove top cover.
        3. Remove bolt carrier group.
        4. Load magazine.
        5. Install bolt carrier group.
        6. Install top cover.

question.. if made into a manually operated shotgun by disabling the gas system, is one then able to remove the mag lock? Still not sold if the maglatch solution of changing the gas puck is enough but thought of this additional question during my thought process.

As a manually operated (straight pull bolt-action) shotgun it can legally use detachable magazines (standard magazine release or "bullet button" magazine lock) and have a folding/extending stock with a pistol grip (minimum overall length with stock folded/collapsed needs to be 26").

Remove gas piston and plug the gas block = no longer semi-auto and considered manually operated.

I do not see a way to do this without ruining the gas block...

Quiet - can the OP sell it out of state? Through a site like gunbroker.com?

Looks like that would be legal through section E.

It’s a single stack magazine. Trying to. Load it with the bolt removed would be a nightmare.

You can jam rounds into a double stack magazine - straight down

                  Not a single stack.

To me, if you are planning on staying in CA, register it and keep it a working gun or sell it.

If you might abandon the state, either register it or make it gas free until you move and can return it to normal.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

should have sold it late 2016, would have gotten a pretty penny for it.

easiest way to sell it would be to fix the magazine.

Does anyone have an opinion on this device:
MagLatch is the first and only solution to make AK patterned firearms California Compliant without losing features. Manufacturing premium quality compliance kits for ban states to convert your existing rifle or making your new purchase compliant. Inventors of the F.N.G.R. AR15/AR10 fixed magazine device.

They claim it's a reversible conversion, but not sure how it actually functions without having seen the device.
