Product idea roundup: 3D printable things!

Alrighty fellow Calgunners, here is the scoop.

I currently make magazine grip extensions on my 3D printer for Beretta 9000/8000/8045 handguns since the molds for those extensions are destroyed and thus are no longer in production. Got a lot of happy customers with my 3D printed products and want to expand my offerings.

What out-of-production guns that you know of need little gizmos and gadgets to work right or better? Think easily-broken magazine floorplates, grip extensions, anything that is weird or niche that may or may not have a following.

If you have a product I can use to model to expand my business, I will give you two copies for free as a "thank you"!

Not out of production, but never made. I've been wanting an insert to go between the buttpad and stock of my Magpul MOE Fixed Carbine Stock so I can have a longer length of pull without having to drill and pin my buffer tube.

I can make this happen! Got a buttstock I could borrow?

Do you have a FARO arm or CMM to help bring a donor part in as a .DXF or step file?

I don't, but I have a spare buttpad and could probably make an impression of the stock. They're cheap though, $20-30.

            I could deal with that.

I don't, just a set of calipers and a few other little tools.

Yes! There is definitely a demand for an extended replacement cap for the Magpul fixed carbine stock. You should make them in +1 inch, +1.5 inch, etc lengths and let people choose which one to buy.

Also, for fans of Swiss rifles, there's a red bakelite bolt knob on M1911 carbines & others that degrades over time. It's a much smaller market but it's also a pretty simple piece.

Or how about some sort of jig that clamps a smartphone onto a spotting scope. This would be more complex since you'll have to make adjustible pieces to account for different scopes & phones. There are also already products available, but they're pretty expensive. *IF* you can come up with a product under those prices then it will work, but you'll definitely be designing for a price point.

Basepads for 10-rd M&P mags that are compatible with aftermarket magwells, and don't cost $25 each.

Or an adapter that allows the use of aftermarket basepads.

Someone on another thread asked if this could be done, and it could. In fact I would be interested in more than one. I tried to make something on my own, but for the time being, I was just going to live with the shorter LOP. The hardest part I think will be finding screws that are the correct thread pitch and length. When you swap the supplied Rubber Pad with the extended Rubber Pad, the original screws are reused. Magpull just insets the depth into the new pad deeper so it matches the old pad. They(Magpul)do not have longer screws. I emailed Magpul and this was the answer I got.....Hello,

Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, sir, we do not have any longer buttpad screws to send you other than what come with the stock.

The dimensions of the screws used to secure the buttpad o the stock is: .164-18 X .500L

                      Which is basically a #8-18 X 1/2in screw.

                      Hope this helps.

                      Thanks,
                      Mike

So in order to use the Buttpad to hold everything together, a Screw that has that exact thread pitch, but approx 2 1/4 inches long with a washer type head x2 is required. It has to be that thread, or you run the risk of stripping the threads out of the Buttstock and if its to long then it would potentially break through at the bottom and look like crap. At the top it aligns with the QD Sling Mount, so breaking through would not be as noticeable. I hope this helps.

You wouldn't necessarily have to get longer replacement screws. You could make an extension that uses the original screws to secure it to the stock, then drop flange nuts into the side of the extension that you would then screw the buttpad into with whatever screws you find that work....if that makes sense.

And so my observation is, someone has a 3D printer, they are getting cheap. They want to do gun related things and make money, I get that.
But as seen here in this short post, they want it for a bargain. Niche items for cheap, not going to work.

There are all sorts of things to do. Printers have dropped DRAMATICALLY in pricing but I am more targeting enthusiasts who aren't into the whole printing scene.

Assuming that the Fabricated Extension is Hollow and the correct depth to use the original screws, to do what you are suggesting would require some sort of insert that could be placed inside the extension. I don't know enough about 3D printing to be helpful to this aspect of things, It may become to complex, I don't know.
