    American Rifleman vs. Shooting Illustrated

I've been getting American Rifleman for quite some time now but today I am switching to getting Shooting Illustrated instead.

I have never opened up a Shooting Illustrated magazine before or seen one, but by the description on the NRA website, I feel this magazine is more suitable for me than American Rifleman.

If you have a monthly subscription to Shooting Illustrated, what are your thoughts on this magazine?

FWIW, I consider myself mostly a pistol target shooter/competitor.

I'm thinking of changing just for the sake of a change... I'm interested to hear what people have to say as well.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Yep, I've only gone hunting once however I don't really consider myself a hunter.

In the gun world, I am more interested in tactical/practical shooting than anything else.

Funny you'd mention it because I was actually thinking of switching to American Hunter. Something I'm getting a little more interested in as I get older, and I get kind of tired of reading about guns I can't have in CA. Well thanks to the SSE days I have a few unicorns for sure, but you know what I mean.

It's a great magazine. It used to be available off the shelf at bookstores and I was a subscriber for years before it became part of the NRA "free" subscriptions. Nowadays I just subscribe to both AR and Shooting Illustrated. IIRC the second subscription is very inexpensive, like $$9/year.
          Just get both.

I read American Rifleman, Shooting Illustrated, and America's 1st Freedom online. I also get A1F in paper.

Same info content (fairly low and repetitive), and no weird ads for strange junk, and no appeals for $.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

              Tagged.

On my phone atm but I will come back by tmrw with samples of each mag (in digital pdf format).

You can also order an extra mag. You can choose physical or digital delivery for each.

I've had a physical delivered to me and digital for my wifes account. I donate the physical copy to a charity that sends care packages to our troops over seas.

With a household of NRA life+ members, we receive Shooting Illustrated in addition to all the other NRA periodicals. It is a good read, and offers stuff that seems geared towards newer shooters, as well as a few articles for us in the older segment. There seems to be an emphasis on "Black rifles", which helps to attract younger folks, something that I see as a very good idea.

                  I'm back.

Check out these recent issues to get a taste:

                  American Rifleman Jan '18
                  Shooting Illustrated Jan '18
                  American Hunter Jan '18
                  America's First Freedom Jan '18

^^^ That issue of America's First Freedom features a MUST READ article regarding the recent church murders in TX and the subsequent response from a really humble man who is also a NRA member.

One more thing. Shooting Sports USA is another NRA publication. It's actually available as a digital download FREE!

You can find that here, go to the site, click the menu, choose monthly magazine: www.ssusa.org

And here's a sample, Shooting Sports USA Jan '18

I made the switch several months ago. I like it better. It caters more towards my interests: modern/tactical firearm & accessories. With American Rifleman I'd get articles on some antique gun made in 1920 that I had no interest in.

Also, the first 20ish pages or so for Shooting Illustrated is more or less same as American Rifleman. With ads and NRA news and stuff, if that matters

+1 on American Hunter. Its a very good NRA publication. Especially if you have hunting interests...
