Get a 9mm or another 45.

Go to a Pistol Range and rent a bunch of different varieties, including ones you wouldn't normally try.

If you keep the 40, I think you can buy a factory 9mm slide/barrel and be able to shoot both calibers.

Every time there was an ammo scare 40 cal was ALWAYS easy to find on shelves...
