I use Johnson's paste wax to "lube" and protect my table saw table because it doesn't harm wood (or steel). Same with plane beds. Sure, it's cheap but it ought to do the job. My experience with a wood stock hunting rifle is that the finish gets worn with use so it will need periodic touchups anyway.
I use boiled linseed oil on my stock to protect it from moisture. -
Without knowing the exact chemical composition of both it's had to say what exactly the differences are between them. However, given that Renaissance Wax is supposed to be completely harmless and is used to preserve museum quality objects is a point in its favor. Anecdotally, I waxed a number of blued firearms I never shoot and they've all help up beautifully over the years.Comment

Debated this also. Figured my revolvers were all $2000-4000 items.....bought the Renaissance. Small, small difference compared to the guns.

I use to use Howards wax when I had rifles with expensive wood stock. Awards is made with beeswax. Johnson wax is made with petroleum wax.

Or, you can get a can of Boshield T9 developed by Boeing. The absolute best for protection against moisture/rust. No need to rub, it is spray on and dries leaving a non sticky film (paraffin&other goodies). A big can is under $20 and lasts you a lifetime.
Just my .02 cents.Comment

On wood?
I thought the OP was looking for something for wood grips.
