    Is cleaning necessary?

I'm going to be picking up a gun I PPT tomorrow and I was planning to go straight to the range afterwards. I remember the last owner said that she had not fired it in a couple years

Assuming I function check before using it do you think it is necessary that I need to clean it before hand? Should I do anything else after that amount of time has passed since usage. She says the round count is low maybe a couple hundred but may not have been cleaned since last usage.

Only if you want to insure you aren't wasting your time going to the range.

At a bare minimum I would run a patch down the barrel.

I would base necessity on a field strip. If it isn't gunked up with old lube and residue I would oil it and run it.

This is good advice on any gun you personally have not cleaned or shot before. Always check the bore on a new gun (to you) before loading and shooting.

If the bore is clear and clean, (or semi clean, does not have to be super shiny) just a few drops of oil on the slide, rack it a few times, and you are ready to go.

              Good luck.

I’ve never once cleaned and/or oiled a gun before shooting it, new or used. Make sure barrel is clear, and shoot the piss out of it. If a gun won’t run a lil dry or dirty it’s not for me. My carry guns look like you kicked them around in the dirt for an hour, and have to run that way. If it won’t cycle dry or with a little powder residue on it then adios it goes

My recommendation is that you not disassemble guns further than your skill level.

It is fine to clean it and check the barrel for any obstructions, dirt, grease Etc but don't take it apart and mess something up if you don't know what you're doing.

You just bought this gun and you want to function test it first.

if you've messed something up it might not function as it did when it was last fired and then sold to you.

So at least for the first range visit I would do minimum safety / quality / cleanliness checks only.

Just to my two cents to try and avoid a "he says it worked and you say it doesn't work" type argument.

You forgot to tell us what gun you're getting and that might help but no matter what you do get there's probably a lot of videos on YouTube on how to check it and do a cleaning when you're ready at that stage.

What is the gun? I'd be less concerned if a revolver and bore and chambers clear of excess oil and grease if gun isn't incredibly filthy.

I'd be very concerned if a military surplus firearms covered with cosmoline and not properly cleaned.

Any and every PPT firearm I have ever picked up gets a full strip down, review and clean/lube before I put it next to my face

Same here. But I do this with new guns, too.

^^^ new and used. It doesn't take that long to quick clean it.
