Last year, in preparation for the new ammo laws, I got my FF03 and COE last year.

Just looked at my COE today and they expire every year. Mine expires on the 17th of this month.

It's easy to renew online (with your COE number) at: https://cfars.doj.ca.gov

Yes, those that obtain the COE probably know this already.

Hence in the threads about ammo ordering, people listed out the annual cost of keeping the 03FFL and COE active.

Be sure to update your CFARS profile to reflect your new COE expiration date when your new COE is issued. It will not happen automatically. And if you don't catch it when you register a new C&R gun, they will kick it back to you.

Also, not all folks are getting COE expiration notices by mail anymore, and not by email, so be sure you remind yourself some other way of your expiration date.
