    Boresight for kids training

Just got a Rascal.22 for my daughter. She is young and it will be a good opportunity to teach her early around gun safety. But she is excited to shoot it. I was thinking of getting a bore sight laser to use so she can practice looking through the prep sights to see the laser on the target. Has anyone done this before?

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. She can safely practice looking through the sights and holding the rifle stead either indoors or in the back yard. Just make sure she does NOT look down the barrel at the laser.

      How young is she?

i would POUND in the 4 rules of firearm safety before she even thinks about pointing or aiming at ANYTHING.

work one of those rules for a week to two weeks for about 30 minutes to an hour every night until you have gone through all the rules.

apply a good strict discipline that she responds to if she violates any of the rules. positive reinforcement when she does well.

obviously be careful as you approach as it may turn her off completely but just handing her a gun and lightly teaching her about safety may not be the best approach...once you feel comfortable then pound in trigger discipline and control because no amount of aiming a laser is going to get shots on targets once that laser turns into real projectiles.

IF you cannot repeat off the top of your head the 4 rules of firearm safety then you know where you need to begin.

While I am against people wasting their money on laser boresighters to use when boresighting (because they are not accurate and it's easier to do it without them), in this application, I think it's a great idea! In fact, I just bought a Rascal for training little ones and I think I'll do the same thing.

it will also be useful for practicing dry fire trigger control, since she will be able to see the dot if it moves when she pulls the trigger.

i don't use lasers to aim my weapons, but I use them often for practicing dry fire trigger control.

            Thanks for your input.

She is young, 4. I don't really expect her to do much shooting for the next year or two but the sale was too good to pass up so I got the rascal. Even when we do go shooting it might be months at a time between going. I am in no hurry to get her behind the trigger but want to use this time now to establish gun safety and work on getting comfortable with the rifle.

My thought was this could make a good training tool for both of us. One so I can see she has the sights on target and two so she could see it as well.

I got her some dummy rounds so we can practice at home loading and unloading and handling the firearm in a safe environment so when we go out for the first time she is not overwhelmed.

Get an Airsoft rifle and same rules apply. Then she can practice at home and not months at a time.
