Ammo "Specific" (not the new CA laws)

Guys,

I have a question and was wondering how many people relate to this -

So, we all have range ammo, HD/SD ammo, and maybe some "specialty" ammo too. My question is the purpose, and quantity you think would be sufficient. Let me explain more...

For Example, take 9MM - I have Winchester Ranger 147gr, 124 +P Gold Dots, Federal HST 147, 124+P Golden Saber for HD/SD. For range/practice - American eagle, Federal, Speer, etc...(115gr -124 gr). Sooo.... the question is - HOW MUCH HD/SD ammo do you keep on hand? I mean, we buy cases of range ammo. But HD/SD ammo is expensive too and not necessary to have an excessive amount. Having said that - in EACH caliber how much would you keep in 223, 12Gauge, 9mm, (common calibers for HD/SD) etc?

I only have 9mm and .40S&W (but I may have to expand into .45 in the new year).

I purchased a case of each of my preferred HD/SD ammo in each caliber. In searching for deals over the past 6 months, I was able to find my preferred HD/SD ammo at prices where buying a case seemed like a good idea.

I like to occasionally shoot my HD/SD ammo - a couple of magazines every other range trip or so. So a case of each should last me several years. If I only very rarely shot my HD/SD ammo, maybe a case wouldn't make sense; but even so, the prices available over the last 6 months made the decision a lot easier. And, frankly, I expect our legislature and next governor will try and get up to more mischief, perhaps trying to ban the sale of certain forms of HD / SD ammo.

BTW - I went ahead with the FFL03 + CoE route, but still felt like it made sense to lay away some decent inventory.

First and foremost, in very rare, rare cases do I keep more than one kind of ammo. SD ammo need not be fancy and expensive to do what job it is supposed to do. If you disagree with this notion, stop reading now, you only want input from people who buy boutique ammo and shoot something else.

But you'll never get five-9 confidence in your SD ammo if you buy and shoot boutique stuff.

Anyways, For HD/SD stuff, I keep over 1,000 rounds for semi auto, 250-500 for revolver, and 25-50 for shotgun. Rifle is a unique case for me, but we are at 750-1000.

For plinker stuff, the numbers are the same. Because the ammo is the same. My philosophy is meplat kills, not boutique bullets.

I pretty much only shoot reloads, but I keep maybe 100 rounds each of SD ammo (usually some form of Buffalo Bore) in a few common calibers, a couple hundred in 00. I keep a PCC for SD, so no specific rifle loadings.

For my 9mm. I bought a case of 1000 HD 115gr hollow points. I shot a 100 to make sure they feed ok. My practice ammo is also 115gr.

I have so many boxes of 20 HD ammo for 45 and 40 and 9mm in a variety of brands.
That's why when I saw 1000 9mm hollow point. I bought it.

I also picked up a 500 case of 40cal HD.

I figured it would be easier to shoot more consistent with the same ammo.

For HD, I bought enough hollow points to run a mag through it and then I've kept enough for one mag. For me I'm comfortable if my gun can run a mag without a malfunction.

Regular "range" ammo will kill you just as dead as any HD rounds. Might not be as fancy or create symmetrical petals but it will still make a hole and have similar results. While I have several calibers with just range ammo, I would not think twice about grabbing one if needed for HD and worry about what type of rounds I have loaded in the firearm.

since we are in agreement, thought I'd say for absolute confidence in the loads, if any rounds get FTF, FTE, etc, then it's time to dump that range ammo and switch to something else, because it's just as likely to fail as some boutique HD ammo that I've only shot 100 of.

Couple hundred 9mm and 12ga. A box of 50 for my revolver.

I reload everything but my self defense ammo. Occasionally run the SD stuff to maintain function and POI, but 90% reloads.

About 8k rounds of defensive ammo in .40, but only because I got it cheap. Only have about 1500 each in 38, 357, and 380...

Got thousands of rounds of range ammo. Maybe 4 mags worth of 9mm SD ammo. If things get sketchy enough that 4 mags is questionable I’ll be using an AK.

For HD, I bought enough hollow points to run a mag through it and then I've kept enough for one mag. For me I'm comfortable if my gun can run a mag without a malfunction.

Have 10,000 rds. of handgun ammo....but similar idea to 'Wordup', only about 250 hollow pts.

I've run maybe two mags of hollow pts. through each gun and that's it. They all work fine, never had a hollow pt. hiccup in any of the handguns.

While stocking up over the past year I ended up with 3000 federal HST 124g 9mm, 1000 HST .380, & 1000 HST .45. I bought 200 5.56 gold dots and had a couple boxes of federal soft points already. I wanted to have plenty for function testing any potential future defensive firearms I might acquire as well as normal cycling.

You got family or loved ones that your guns will go to when you shuffle off this mortal coil?

I figure enough ammo of each sort to last through your lifetime and then enough more to last through the lifetime of the inheritor of your guns.

I do not believe it can be taken for granted that ammo will be available for sale in years to come.

I have range ammo and I have HD ammo. For home, I want something that will start to expand when I hit something solid so I won't shoot through the house into another house.

If you need more than a magazine of Hollow Points for self protection, your probably not going to make it. Meaning that’s a hell of a fire fight, to be exchanging that many rounds.
